[ BBBBug ] Olympus 45mm /f1.8

Got mine from TK yesterday, impatient to wait for stocks to arrive in Parisilk. Overheard they sell many yesterday, maybe the only newly release lens that generates so much interest. :bsmilie:

Built quality is good but the zoom ring paint seems to drop off easily. Focus is fast, not as fast as 12/2 but it hunts a lot in low light.

Finally, we have a good portrait lens for m4/3. Now I've my ideal 3 primes setup. :)

Nice setup. The 2 pancakes are sweet :)

I think I'd get the 45mm eventually. But I probably will still bring the 20 along for general use.

Steve Huff just posted his review of this wonderful lens. He said "This lens rocks. Period. "

Enjoyed his reviews, including this one. I agree with what he says about the size. My Pentax isn't very big compare w Other brand dSLR cameras, but I seldom use them anymore after I got GF1...

It seems that the new bodies really makes a difference in low light AF of the 45.

I feel pancakes are more suitable for small camera bodies, glad that m4/3 has some good quality pancakes. These 3 lens are light and takes up little space in bag, which I think is the purpose of m4/3.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, the new oly bodies does not appeal me. I still very much prefer the form factor of E-PL2, it's ergonomics. Have to live with it and work around.

Great AF on Panny GH2. Even in low light. Works well on Q-AF & C-AF modes. In video Continuous AF also works. Very nice lens. :). More poison to Panny owing folks!

Unfortunately no image stabilisation with this lens for Pany owners. Need very good light, high ISOs or very steady hands or tripods on Pany m43 cameras. The Leica 45mm f/2.8 Macro with OIS might be a better choice for Pany m43 especially for portraits, macros and low light shoots where size of lens and speed of AF is not that important, not that the Leica 45mm focuses slow though.

Can use high ISO to compensate since performance at high ISO is good. But If I want a DSLR form factor, I'll go for DSLR. I never shoot video so GH2 has no advantage to me. Now only G3 interest me, but panny JPEG keeps me away, unless there's some magical settings I can apply to match oly.

Not for me. I always try to keep the ISO as low as possible all the time when I shoot. I don't even find the high ISO of my D700 good enough so there's no way I would be satisfied with the high ISO of the GH2 or G3.

Yep.. but with a bit of skill it can be done : ) I have shot this down to 1/20 at ISO 1600 and 1/13 at ISO 3200 and managed to get reasonable shots.. but keeper rate drops. Typically I can go down to 1/25 and ISO 800 or 1600 and get good shots. But then again, besides the huge Panny 45mm/f2.8, all the other panny primes (14, 20) also dont have OIS.. Framing it using the EVF, gives the standard 3 point stabilization. Very necessary when the SS drops.

But..its a bit of a problem... maybe i'll look at the E-PM1 with IBIS as a solution : )

Wow! Steve Huff L O V E S this lens!!! I guess being $399 helps a lot!! I do agree with him that with the 12 mm, the 25 mm and the 45 mm, you have the holy trinity of micro 4/3. The 45 mm is next on my list. Although I have the 20 mm, I feel that the 25 mm is just tat much better that it is worth the additional bulk.

Just a side comment though, and its my opinion...the panny lenses are good to use, but not good to look at (hokkien phrase). The Oly lenses, on the other hand, are good to look at, and good to use. Sweet....synthesis of form AND function.

Sorry I being reading the last and first few pages and couldn't find the price for this lens.

Could anyone here please repost the lens price again.

Thanks.
