balinese stone "lions"? wondering that the chinese mythical lions (lions are not found in ancient china) does looks very similar to these stone carvings in this hinduistic island, i read up and found that the stone lions that guards the entrances as well as the northern lion dances are actually an inheritance from the asiatic lions in india. on the contrary and more ironically, the southern (cantonese) lion dance depicts more closely to the true chinese inheritance of the mythical animal "nian".

i can see that the frustrations and bad luck didnt affect your compositions, great job, your shots make me stare into them...

i might have rant a little too much. maybe i have better optimisation of time in laos and india, but actually retrospectively, i have shot enough in volume for bali. just that i find myself setting certain pre-expectations which could be frustrating when i fail to get it.

time for adjustment really.

sometimes we set a too high expectation of ourselves which leads to frustration when we do not get the desired results. Maybe we need to enjoy ourselves more and the picture will come naturally. nonethless good takes you have there in bali. tks for sharing

hopefully i can cope with that on my next trip

from the looks of similar bermuda worn, it looks like mother and son. only thing is that what is the mother doing with the henna on her son? is she learning the skills while receiving some services herself?

something is missing here. contrast not high enough, sunset not bright enough, shadows not dark enough, or should i opt for other shots with ppl silhouette on the left instead of showing of the shallow water texture....?

i think a bit of the first two. the people are in a fine position. i also do not like the color palette personally.. and not saturated enough for my liking

i played around with layers (multiply) and did some color balance adjustments, came up with this

2069252710_bb8a0a5129_o.jpg

then did some subtle tweaks to curves..

let me know if you want me to take this down.. it is just a further interpretation :dunno: upon a few more looks, perhaps the further saturation/curve modification does not work. the first version looks more natural.

it is al'rite to leave them there. but i think maybe it is due to lack of a gradient. but too late already, going to zzz...

I think you could underexpose (or move the 'black' in more) so that the people become a complete black, then should have more contrast in the skies too. Potentially balance can be readdress, how exactly not sure too.

did u lie down to take the very first picture? :p

on the contrary, i lightened the figures to get more details. to dramatise (blackened) a backlit background (obviously bright) while retaining details and natural looking tones and colors of the clouds become a three-way conflict for me.

it is done by zigview electronic viewfinder, which is similar to what is also found in the olympus's angle-alterable LCD live preview. becos i need as straight a horizon as possible, i did not shoot by estimation i.e. the lomo way.

it is done by squatting.

when i need to have better horizon, and if the floor is not wet, i will lie down. obviously i didn't becos i was at the beach.
