You must rub it in :sticktong What airline or travel agent did u use?
Sorry for the reply that comes so late. I travelled on Air Asia for my flights. I did not go through any travel agent. However because Air Asia don't do direct flights from SG to Bali, nor JB to Bali, so i went up to KL and take. Saw a breathtaking view of SG from 35,000 feet above as it pass by!
But if you're going to travel in July, it's better that you call up several tour agencies to enquire about air tickets, or keep a lookout on the papers for Garuda, Silkair or SIA promotions.. Book early that is, because July is considered the peak season in Bali.
Judging from a 4D3N trip, probably this is what i can suggest you guys.. (BUT don't follow exactly, as you might find better places to go, backpacking free n easy trip is not so much of planning but of what you experience there)

Once you arrive in DPS (Denpasar airport) in Bali, buy a standard price 'taxi ticket' to Kuta for 25,000rp and a driver will drive u wherever u want in Kuta. It's very near probably around 2-3km drive. Get accomodation in Kuta is fairly easy as there are many to choose from. For losmen (affordable accomodation), try Poppies Lane I, II. Check out
here for some very useful and accurate lodging and eating info about Bali. At the same time you can refer to the Lonely Planet guide for map of the various losmen. For eating, must try warang 96 off Poppies Lane II. I have most of my meals there during the 3 days i stayed in Kuta. They offer great local and international food at a very afforable price. I realized in Kuta when you get closer to the beach, the price automactically get higher, not uncommon to see a >100% increase in prices! Do take note..!!
Spend the day around Kuta, MUST get a driver to drive you guy around South Bali for some really nice scenery and standing on cliffs watching big big waves crashing below u... Make sure he knows the places well and always AGREE ON THE PRICE beforehand. Might sounds naggy, but this is very important.. 1 place to visit is Ulu Watu (Temple on cliff)..
There're lots of monkeys there, and be careful of your belongings and also glasses! When i was concentrating on taking a photo, a monkey just come from behind and took my glasses away from my face! I tried to ask the local people for help, and they throw some fruits up to the monkey which is on a tree. He returned my glasses, but it was broken.. Somemore, the locals demand me to give them money no less than 10,000rp... no choice, paid and just forget about it.
Another place near it is "Pura Segara - Tegal Wangi - Desa Adat Jimbaran"... It's actually a place for ceremonies, but when i was there it's empty. If the main gate is lock, flank from the left side, but be very careful when carrying loads of camera stuffs, as 1 wrong step will result in a 20m fall down the scary waves. You'll be well rewarded with the huge waves and it's really awesome.. Waves go into a 'cave' normally, but when it escapes out, it's mist.. very interesting.
If time permits, take a 3hr drive up to Tanah Lot temple to catch the sunset there. Expect lots of tourists, and it should be low tide when u reach there, so walk over the sea bed to the temple and snap some good silhoutte.
The next day, you guys can go up to Ubud, by tourist shuttle bus, it's hassle-free as prices are fixed and non-neg. (Remember to buy the tickets the day before). Once you reach Ubud, try to stay at a accomodation as near to 'Ubud Palace' as possible.. It's where most things are happening. If you want to see any of the dances/performance, you can get almost all in Ubud. Being noted as the most cultural town in Bali, you'll be spoilt for choices! When you buy the tix at the temple counters or from locals on the street, both cost the same at 50,000rp. I urge you to buy them from locals because they can earn commission of 5,000rp from each purchase. Let them earn, they are very poor. You don't lose anything. There are audience seats when you see dances. So go early to chop a front row seat and if it's in the day, choose your seat carefully according to the direction of the sun.
Apart from just walking around in Ubud, hire a driver to take you guys up to Penelokan, Batur and Kintamani, all are along the same road. There is a coffee plantation along the way, do stop and see how they fry the coffee beans and every person is entitled to a small glass of coffee/chocolate/ginger tea. Try the coffee, it's very different from the normal 3-in-1, mocha or english coffee..
Stop at the Ulun Danu temple at Kintamani, it's one of the most beautiful temple in Bali i've been to! The high altitude makes great blue sky and nice silky clouds.
If possible, go to Pura Besakih temple, the largest temple in Bali, 1000m up the side of Gunung Agung (3124m).
After all the driving about around Ubud, I suggest you to travel up to Lovina and also hire a guide to bring you guys around.. Some places to go Gitgit waterfall (highest in Bali), Beratan lake (with nice Ulun Danu temple built on the lake, do not confuse this with the one at Kintamani), Candikuning market, Botanical garden, Banjar hot spring, Brahma Wihara Ashram (the only buddhist monastery in bali). All these places can be visited within 8-9hrs.
I like Lovina for it's black volcanic sand at the beach, and it's lack of tourists that make the place truly special. The next day morning you guys can book a Dolphin tour (which i didn't go), it's very early in the morning, 6am i think, you will set off to the sea and wait for dolphins to surface.. However it's not everyday you will see, so much of it depends on luck.. Don't expect any refunds.. Like what my lonely planet book says 'respect nature'.. haha!
If everything goes like this, day 4 u should return to somewhere near the airport. Probably you can try places like Sanur or Jimbaran (both place i've never been to), but heard it's great for seafood, restaurants or bars! Well, pls enjoy yourself on the very last day.. If the flight back to SG happens to be at night, why not go back Kuta before sunset and snap the people on beach and the surfers.. Not forgetting the amazing sunset at Kuta Beach!
ps: my apologies for the lengthy post and occasionally bad english. Hope it serves you guys well!
