B+W filters: worth paying so much?

i am always looking to find alternatives to B+W.. no doubt the Hoya is good also but what i dun like about them is they are harder to clean, the glass is hold by some spring clips (encounter some Hoya filer with glass can rotate freely) and the rim of the filter is not brass which is more prone to stuck to lens.

I still get good hoya filter that is for mine cheaper lenses else conform B+W for my more expensive lenses..

I lost my lens cap when it decided to take a dive into the Nile.
So my B+W UV filter became my "lens cap" for quite some time.
I also always had the hood on my camera so that also offered some protection.
After my filter acted as a lens cap for 3 months, it did get scratched.
But these scratches are extremely fine, that you need to look very closely.
Also, they do not show up in pictures nor do they affect IQ in any way.
So yes, definitely put a B+W filter on your lens when you go travelling! :bsmilie:

Saw the recommendation here and I went ahead to contact the seller Henessy from Mass Sale to purchase a 77mm B+W filter. He advised me to go Fu Lu Shou (the address shown in his thread) to buy which I did. Upon reaching the store, I ask the lady shop owner for the filter and after she pass it to me, she started grumbling saying she has no profit for selling the filter and she is only helping a relative. I requested her to show me a 2nd filter as I noticed that the color of the 1st rim is uneven, she handled me a 2nd filter. During the process, she was very rude and asked me if I need to see more .... There were nasty remarks passed by her ... I returned the stuff to her and walk out of the shop. I immediately called Henessy to feedback of what had happened but he said there is nothing much he could do except to post on his thread that interested buyer can only inspect 3 filters. I told him I was only looking at the second filter and asked why is she behaving in such a rude manner. Henessy explained that lady is her mother and he could do nothing!!!

I just wish to share my bad experience with you guys and warned you of the situation you would face. I have paid $3 for ERP and $2.20 for car park and never did I wish such incidence to happen to myself or anyone of you. My advise is to buy from Henessy if you do not require inspection/checking of the products for you are paying $10s or $100s of dollars.

I was in similar scenario like u, I went there at 12pm sayingthe shop will open, it only open @ 2pm. I go all the way, jam at Bt Timah, not to mention car-park too.

The middel-aged lady was rude alright... but we look for cheap stuff so what the heck.

Also she offered me the job to work for her $1900 per month....

But his price was cheap.. however I also found another mass sale by another person also bringing in B+W, I think also trustworthy. The pick-up is in RedHill MRT. Will try him next time...

Yes, it is worth it but since you have no problem with hoya then stick to hoya. BTW, the best filter I have used is Heliopan.

Mr Wong may have stock for Heliopan filters, call him at 62237217 daily after 1430 to check out. Unfortunately due to the quantity he can stock and the high price, he may not have full range of filter size now and he is selling the coated version only. Only certain filter sizes he is selling the multi-coated version.

A qn. I have lens of different diameters and I have to get a filter for each diameter? Step-up/down ring recommended? For example to go from 67mm to 77mm, I have to get 2 rings - 67-72mm and 72-77mm. Will it cause vignetting?

BTW is 77mm a std diameter?

Stepping-up is less likely to cause vignetting than stepping down (Step down = using a filter that is smaller than the lens diameter thread). However stepping up may also cause vignetting (more likely on UWA lenses).

To answer your question, you first have to explain why you would need a ND for all your lenses :dunno:

A UV filter for each lens for protection is common, but I doubt many people buy a CPL for every lens, let less a ND110 which reduces 10 stops of light.

Just went to Taiwan, a 82mm B+W fileter UV-Haze only cost S$120, CP quoted me $220....72mm is only S$60 in Taiwan.

I've been using B+W filters all my life and I can guarantee this top notched filters are worth every penny paid. There was just once I bought a Kenko filter for one of my cheap lens. It gave me so much fogging prob that I freaked out. I still had to clean the water stains on the filter. I never had fogging probs with B+W filters. But please beware that the authentic B+W(made in germany) filter have gold inscriptions around their rims. I've seen made in china/taiwan ones with white inscriptions which are sold slightly cheaper but I'm not so sure about their quality.
Lesson learnt: No cheap thrills, No frills

I've personally had massive fogging problems while shooting in extreme weather conditions so I don't think even the original B+W has any "special fog-resistant coating"

Think it is in yr mind. Condensation had to do w temp. Unless B&W use wood to make their filters I don't see howmuch more advantage you can get in this aspect..

Yeah, he is trustworthy and accommodating too. Look up VisionTechnik. He has quite an exhaustive range of B+W filters at very reasonable prices. Definitely cheaper than in stores and also other mass sales around. :thumbsup:
