If you could shoot with either, then save the money and get the D700. You can buy one NOW and can use the money saved for some good glass or a speedlight.
The people who have their mind set on the D800 do it because the D700 is not adequate for their requirements. If you have no such hard and fast requirements, you'll be just as happy with the D700. It was and still is an awesome camera.

since the 5d iii street price is about 4.2k body only(check canon thread), I think we should expect d800 prices to be along 3.6 3.7 max based on their $500 USD RRP difference.
Anything close to 4k is absolutely not worth paying for right now, IMO.
Let's see what comes on the 22nd

You can use it in DX crop mode, but it's only 5MP or so in the D700. I don't think the imaging circle of the lens is big enough for FX.
You can always get the 50 1.8 D/G to go with the D700. Both are reasonably priced and are extremely good.

I guess you reali dunno much about lens and their usage on fx and dx body. Do more and more research my bro.. It will help u alot. If u dun have much experience, u should not jump so fast. Learn to crawl before u walk. Hint my advise. If not, even u have the world best camera in hand, it is only a waste. Smile. No hard feeling.

That's official Suggested Retail Price. But the shops always sell lower than that, it's 4.2k official with GST, see Canon thread

I would applaud Canon for releasing the 5Diii earlier than D800 in the market and at such a competitive price (resulting in the excellent street price). I believe Nikon wouldn't dare to price it anything more than 4.2k (which result in a street price of 3.6-3.7k range).
