D90 grip cost about $200+-

D300/700 grip cost $350+-

D7000 grip cost $250+-

Now this D800 grip cost $500+-

This will be one camera I'll only buy 3rd party grip. There's simply no reason to slap $400++ at the bottom of the camera so that I don't need to chicken wing when shooting portrait....

This crosses my mind too. In the end, I go for the original because I do not want to damage the D800E and also, I go for the consistent look of the original grip with the camera body. I agree the grip is too expensive given the limited features.

I bought the grip on the same day I bought the D800E. Now I am at Batam without the grip to reduce the weight since this was a family trip but I can tell you, I regret I didn't bring the grip along. It wasn't so much the chicken wing when shooting vertical but the comfort level could be better with the grip.

So I guess I paid about $50 bucks more. This is insane for an insanely crazy priced item. I must be insane. But not having a grip is simply not an option for me. And sorry, third party grips are just not acceptable

D800E?? Nice, when I bought mine, they don't take in D800E...

I got mine through walk in. Shops with wait list advised me not to wait because the list is very very long.
