It also depends on your focussing skills. For the d800 I feel the lack of a split focusing screen is my current limitation. Image u want to take pic of prince William. His body guards block here block there. Then got crowd. And the prince walking. The af will go haywire.
In the end switch to manual mode faster. As I do have budget constraints. So the 24-70 also become one of the main choice for me.
