Morning,

I have a D70 modded with a Hoya R72 and have been getting autofocus problems. Most of my photos turn out of focus, with only about 10% of an entire shoot in focus.

Anyone help here?

who modded your camera?

they need to adjust the AF point.. for my pentax k100d there is a debugging mode where i can do it myself. i'm certain nikon will have something like that too.. but wait for the ir regulars to reply, i think quite a number of people use d70 ir.. shouldn't be a problem :)

Where/Who modded your camera? Could be or could not be an issue but any focus calibration done after the mod?

Modded D70s donot have any auto focus issues.

I've checked out your Tioman IR photos, they seem ok. Perhaps these are the 10% focused ones.

it depend on which lens you used, For lens Nikon 18-200mm , 18-135mm this two lens do not need to adjust the focus screw you still can get sharp photos. for lens like 50mm f1.8 or 1.4, 10.5mm fisheye and 17-55mm f2.8 all these lens need to calibrate the auto focus point.

Hello nightmare, thanks and I think this has been addressed by other veterans.

Hi Teerex, I'm using a D70 not a D70s, dunno if there is any difference. I'm not very sure if any calibration has been done after the mod. The OK ones in the Tioman series are indeed the 10% sharp ones.

Mousedeers, I'm using 18-55mm which is permanently fixed onto this cam as i will be using the 18-200mm on my color cam more often. Does this particular lens need any adjustments?

The thing is that sometimes i can get one tack sharp photo while shooting a certain shot with the same settings throughout.

I also want to know how much AF accuracy is acceptable.
Here I used a 50mm AF at F3.5 and focused on the word "likely"

btw, different lenses will have different "af adjustments" required.

primes tend to have a different set compared to zooms, that's what i've been experieincing with my k100d ir

does anyone know of anywhere or anyone that provide lens calibration services?

i can callibrate ur cam..but i'm not in SG..melaka

u can re-position ur filter distance to the sensor..or u can use the AF screw at in front of the shutter...

Thanks Fireworms,

I just came back from Melaka 3 weeks ago!

Anyway, if i want to adjust the AF screw, is there a standard in adjustments or trial and error?

Thanks in advance

careful...if u change the the screw..u might be :
change the infinity focus
change the near focus

trial n error? can?...but i suggest u using the FocusTestChart > ask google :)

hello, been googling ard for the past few days and have yet to find resources to calibrate the af. any bro kind to share?

Hello All,

Sorry to bring this thread up again. I will be bringing my D70s for IR modifications soon and I found out about the Autofocus issues (in D70 & D70s cam) as discussed in this thread. I've also found information on the calibration of the auto-focus screw as mentioned by some IR photographers here.

My query is if I'm willing to sacrifice the AF function, and use manual focus instead, does this out-of-focus problem still exist? Will I face the same OOF problem using manual focus?

Hope some experienced photographers will provide some advice. Thanks in advanced!

Some lenses have autofocus issues with modded camera. Try to use autofocus take the shot , see where is the focus point. Then try manual and see does the focus shift.
Try another lenses see the focus spot on. Just refocus again may help this issues.

the focusing issue is because IR ray has different focusing point than visible light, so need to manually override, most old manual lenses does have a red dot for IR focusing adjustment.

AF lenses are focusing on visible light, so it is not focus correctly on IR, if you use your eyes to do manual focusing, isn't it still having the same issue?

Just let the person doing the IR Mod to take care the focusing calibrating for you.

Agree. In addition, you may want to add a mark or sticker on your AF lens if it does not have the red dot. It will be a bit of trial and error.
Although this will only be applicable to AF lenses with distance marking.

If focusing calibration is done correctly, you can still get sharp pictures even at maximum aperture.

This guy used 50mm F1.8AF to shoot this:

Thanks for all the replies and advice to my queries. I will go ahead with the mod next week and experience the feel of the modded cam.

Have a good weekend!

Cheers!
