Attire for photographers doing wedding and ROMs

For formal occasions, like Weddings and ROMs, dress the best you can.
You're at the same level as the Justice of Peace, the Wedding Planners or even the Baquet Manager of the Hotel. You are part of the team that makes the wedding possible, or at least makes it go smoothly.
They are all professionals and they their dressing shows that they are serious about what they are doing. A photographer turning up at a wedding with Jeans and T-shirt is just bad taste. It's always better to over dress then underdress.
It's also shows the respec you give to your client/friend's big day.

RL i have to disagree with you. coz i feel that as long not sloppy, not tear here and there... and some say, clean pair of jeans... and a nice T-shirt or short sleeve shirt will do the job unless they are the all back suit event thingy... coz i think most photographers or at least a number of whom i know wears just T-shirt and Jeans for wedding shoot. coz its more flexible... and when the PG is more cofy with himself... of course better result will come out too.... :sticktong

At least a decent long-sleeved shirt, pants, proper shoes if you don't want to put on a tie. Something presentable. Not T-Shirt/Jeans for weddings and ROM shoots. :bigeyes: Kinda outta place and disrespectful since the photographer might be standing behind or beside the JP for ROM to get the angle.

There are many who uses Leica M for weddings. In fact, I find them the most covert compared to the big SLRs. There's quite a lot of difference in human subject interaction compared to using a SLR. Other than the film loading, they're rather easy to engage compared to SLRs, esp when you've learnt the art of pre-focusing.
Not to go OT here, I do agree with Rueyloon. Image counts. Period. As a client, I'm more willing to part my $$ to someone that look professional on my big day, than some who looks like an Ah Beng, if you know what I mean. No offence to whoever.

also agree with rueyloon, my dress code in the morning is more casual but during dinners its always shirt and tie, suits for events black tie for formal parties. 
Think the best advice is to ask first. To add on to the other advices other than attire, i guess can recommend to them (if they don't really know or have any pref) that you will be wearing black, denims are ok if dark navy blue. Just in case some people bang tang against black....hehe.... For day shoots like your fort canning you can wear other colours of course.
For events, it's definitely black as standard. This way you don't stand out, and you will need that if you are accidentally caught in the way (say video) and have to squat down and take cover. Eg, if you are going to wear a vest, it has to be black too. heh...
Just in case someone thinks that long sleeve shirt + pants + biz shoes = ok, then come in a bright yellow long sleeve. ;p

Shirt / Polos and pants / jeans... depends on how formal the event is, even a tie also. It shows respect and besides, you need to be professional about your craft.... T-shirts are out! :nono:

from what I have personally observed, Willy Foo seems one of the snappiest dressers for event photography. He'll show up in a blazer with gear and all.
On the other hand, I've witnessed first hand a couple of event photographers who seem to take pride in showing up at events looking (and smelling!) like war photographers who just stepped out of Iraq into a 5 star ballroom. One even had a Khmer Rouge style neck scarf round his neck!
Actually, if they're your long-time close friends, wheather you're shooting or NOT, u should show them the respect and dress accordingly. I think they see you more as a close friend than a photog right?

actually not a bad idea, a vest, but might I suggest a snazzier Domke Photographer's vest (khaki color) that goes very well with almost any collared cotton shirt/pants combo....about $150 from Cathay or S$110 if you pick it up at Tin Cheung in HK. Just make sure its regularly washed!
Why pay $$$ to advertise for EOS or Nikon? The logic escapes me.

Maybe for me, when the serious occasion calls for it, photographer, organiser or not, I'll juz dress to the event. That's me.
