the model is digital kiss, which is a japan model only, the EF 18-55 USM *japanese model* would also be popular elsewhere, but as usual, its not sold elsewhere, why should it be different this time round?

so unless canon marketing actually sells the black model elsewhere, the popularity of the black model in japan does not mean it will be sold elsewhere.
*btw; this behaviour of exclusivity for the japanese domestic market is not limited to canon, but other japanese companies as well*

last but not least:

The black body EOS Kiss Digital will be sold in the Japanese domestic market only. There are no plans to introduce a black body EOS Digital Rebel in North America. I have no information on Canon Europa's plans.
