Are Teachers or Lecturers forced to write only nice things?

I think it's just the way the assessment is being phrased. In short being tactful.

there are many ways to put across a message.

from 'ah beng, you are very lazy. pls put in more effort'

to 'ah beng, i believe you can improve on your result. pls put in more effort'.

as humans, (applies to kids also), we have different reactions to assessment on ourselves. But in general, people tend to turn defensive when harsh direct words are being put forth. that's when we start to loose our rational judgment and become denial to our shortcomings.

so i would say, the society has changed and that harsh word are a thing of past. i mean now we dun see hooligan roaming the streets collecting protection money. generally, the standard of communication has progresses due to the fact the society is better educated now.

therefore, it is natural that such harsh and direct comments are less common now.

kids now are real lucky... i always had my fair share of bad comments.... guess they really hated me haha

Last time get punished at school, go home and tell parent and get caned somemore.

nowadays, you tell parents, they shoot complain emails. :bsmilie:

DM this isn't just prevalent amongst the lower education institutions anymore. Even Uni profs have to kiss their students derriere if they want to make tenure. Which really defeats the purpose of education in my opinion.:bheart:

yah kena the flying books and exercize books, especially when they are a plastic layer covering, everything goes flying and tearing. Then your parents will chid you for not taking care of the books.

I kena flying wooden dusters before...damn pain. hahahaha

Have you got 5 cigars stuffed into your small mouth?

Have your short pants being pulled and stretched up so that your small ball got squeezed?

Have you been asked to do a handstand and spread open your legs and lean them on the wall while cold water being poured into your pants?

:D

Your teacher must be really sadistic or you have been one of the WORSE students ever seen... hahah :bsmilie::bsmilie:

No need to say "I think so"

No need to mention "IMO".

It is TRUE lah.

No corporal punishment doesn't just mean cannot smack the kid on the bottom (even if he burned down the school). It also means that you cannot hurt his/her self-esteem. Which in turn means, no sarcastic language, no negative remarks.

But hey, *psst* Here's the secret codebook to what the teacher ACTUALLY means when certain things are written in the report book.

Very talkative type, cannot shut up - Actively participates in class discussions.
Always getting into fights - Motivated and self-driven student
Never pay attention in class, always doing other nonsense, doodling, etc - Has keen eye for detail.
Lazy like hill - Sets his own standards, which he will always strive to surpass.
Irritating and very kaypoh - Enthusiastic and helpful student
Blur like sotong - Has great leadership potential
Attitude problem - A very confident student
Dirty, poor personal hygiene - Radiant character

Of course, nowsadays, the parents also quite smart lah.

If teacher writes, "Joe is a brilliant young gentleman who never fails to give his best in whatever he does", and then you see the grades all half-past-six kind, you also know something must be wrong, right?

The report book statements are ALL individually vetted by the P/VP for approval, and if you so much as say something like, "he should put in more effort in his work", it will be a no go.

(It should be re-phrased as "He will continue to improve if he keeps on working hard".)

The children are our leaders of the future, must protect at all costs, maaah... :bsmilie:

They don't make students to eat chalk anymore?

Brother, nowsaday where got chalk? Whiteboard markers lah dey. Now you talk to kids about chalk, they all give you blank stare. Last time feed chalk is not tekan. You see, 20-30 years ago, a lot of kids never eat properly, so must give calcium summplements, maaah.

The "please put in more effort" part sure won't get approved for printing one. It implies the fella is lazy (which could be the truth). Not say cannot write negative things. No negative connotations are allowed.

Shao Lin monastery, ah? Is that you in your userpic?

Frequently absent student --> "a student like him is hard to find." :bsmilie:

Customers are always right and the students are the customers. :bsmilie:

Oh man ... that's like euphemism to the max.

I don't know ... call me 'old fashioned' in some ways.

I understand positive encouragement, but I also believe in honesty. To me, the above is like a cover up just to avoid unpleasantnesses, and like any cover up, it involves LYING! And unchecked, that can contribute greatly to atrophy.

Are you guys saying that the Principals and their veeps actively advocates lying about the performance and progress of a student?

Whatever happened to 'Honour', 'Honesty' and 'Character'?

Wah, here must be a bit more careful. Nobody's gonna say what the gahmen is saying. Let's just say that in many cases, the teachers are probably doing so on instruction from management.

OK, I edited my post. Could edit yours including the quotation so that no one here or CS is put in an 'uncomfortable' position?

Common guys, I'm sure you can think up better ones!

If you ask for a positive letter of rec from your professor, he/she is allowed to decline. That's as negative as most professors go before risking lawsuits for verbal abuse or discrimination or attacks from angry parents. :bsmilie: In the States, most professors practice your mothers' favorite adage: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." And in general, you shouldn't read your letters of rec until you are out of the university. :bsmilie:

When I was in JC, my form tutor wrote a very bad testimonial for me. I threw it away. Many of my friends told me, Wah! How can throw away? Testimonial is VERY important, you know?? But I say no testimonial is better than a bad one (I vaguely remember it to contain "he has been very disappointing in his performance", or something like that.)

But a few years later, when I needed the testimonial, I just went back to JC, they ask me to write my own, and go and find the Form Tutor and let him sign. :bsmilie:
