Hi Big Kahuna,

That's a sweet Nelson Pass Aleph amp!

Hi Laugh,

Have you read British publications such as Hi-Fi Choice, Hifi News and Record Review? I believe the target audience for those 2 mags are a notch above that of What Hifi? In any case, try to read as many as you can. I believe most libraries have copies of Hi-Fi Choice, or any hifi mag for that matter.

As others have already mentioned, hifi is very much akin to photography. My setup consists of:

Adcom GTP400 Preamp
Adcom GFA535 Poweramp
(both of which were purchased new back in July 1991 and still run great today)
Rega Planet 2000 CD Player
Epos M12 bookshelf speakers on Atacama Nexus stands
van den Hul D300 interconnect (CD to preamp)
Kimber PBJ interconnect (preamp to poweramp)

I favour good imaging and a sweet (but not overly in-your-face) midband over thumpy bass. That said, the room acoustics my system resides in isn't too kind to bass - only when i stand in the corner do I hear it.

My musical tastes range from Radka Toneff to Art Pepper to James Taylor, and the occasional Dave's True Story.

For $1500, I believe you can get a very decent system. It really boils down to the sort of sound you're looking for. It took me many years to "fine tune" my system to playback my kind of music. My current system doesn't cost a bomb and is the result of lots of homework.

Yes I've heard costly systems consisting of monobloc Krells and Mark Levinson amps driving behemoth Thiels through a Wadia 302 CD player. Sad to say, I feel most of the music coming from such combos are just going through motion and sorely lack the sparkle and foot-tapping energy of lesser systems. Sure the imaging may be spot-on and the soundstaging breathtaking, but does it want to make you listen to CD after CD after CD or are your ears feeling fatigued after 1 or 2 tracks?

I'd suggest getting a basic system first then decide what's missing from the sound before hasty and costly upgrades.

Have fun!

Thanks for the info.

My current setup will cost me a mere $400, thanks to storeroom discoveries and a good 2nd hand deal.

I will set it up and see where I will go from here.

I have no intention on becoming an audiophile, just want a sound system I can go home to, lounge in my chair and chill out. Somehow I am just unable to achieve that with my current sony hifi system.

If I dont hear the difference, I will probably just return the KEFs to the storeroom, sell the amp and concentrate on photography.. :D

Cool .. another GTP-400 user... using this preamp now but its in bad need of servicing... contacts kinda dirty. Thinking of replacing it with an Audiolab

:bsmilie: Really agree with you on the last part.

Now my only temptations are - Turntable & DAB tuner. Though i'm contemplating on getting a 2nd hand Audiolab 8000C ...

I am also teethering on edge on the darkside..... after changing my system once and increasing the total budget by 3 times for the second....

for all those reading ... beware...

Hi laugh,

What is it the Sony cannot offer?

Believe me ... if you have this mindset.. i'm sure you'll chunk the amp and the speakers in a couple of months ... :)

Why? .. cos the speakers and the cd player isn't doing you any justice.

Yup, bought it after reading Sam Tellig's column The Audio Cheapskate in Stereophile back then. I've had the contacts cleaned by Jimmy at CD Acoustics.

Audiolab eh? I lost interest in the brand after Tag McLaren bought it. But in Audiolab's heyday the Audiolab 8000C/P was one of my favs!

What's your setup like?

I do not know how to describe what the sony is unable to give me but what I do know is I need something else/more.

what kind of mindset you talking about? I will get the spiks and CDP in due time.. :D

I was lucky, happened to fellow my friend who was an audiophile into his friend shop at Simpang Bedok. Saw a 2nd hand Bose wave radio on sale. Price $200, in great condition. Mai Tu Liao, grab it. So now I listen to my CDs and my fav Lush 99.5 on it and off course, its hooked for my gaming too.. I love it. ;)

I got mine 2nd hand too from Asia Sound. Wanted the Audiolab ever since i set eyes on it. Just love the simplistic black look and its seriously hard to find a preamp nowadays which has tone / bass / treble ... record and listen from different sources.

My setup consists of:
Adcom GTP-400
Samson Servo 170 Power amp
Sony MDS-JB940 MD deck
AMC CD6b CD player
Sprit Abosolute Zeroes studio monitors ...
Using cable talk 3.1 cabling ... Monster interconnects ..

Hey by the way,

Did anyone try the Denon PMA-2000IVR amp? I listened to the PMA-1500 some years back. The PMA-1500sounded very sweet, dunno about the 2000IV I'm thinking of getting a PMA-2000IVR. Denon has champaign color which I like :D

The dry / boring ... "this doesn't sound good" mindset (also after a couple of auditioning @ shops in adelphi). Roughly then you'll be able to tell what kind of sound you're after.

For me .. just the search for that perfect system to playback all kinds of genre of music beautifully...

That was my quest and i've found it in my present system. Throw anything at it and i feel happy after listening to it. Even my uncle who spent almost 10K on his hifi commented about my setup

Its hard to match, but planning is essential. Now just itching to change to the Audiolab and EMC-1 (when i have the cash) ...

My GTP actually has the white faceplate. Well white's turned to off-white after 14 years. And the GFA has a black faceplate.

Studio monitors eh? What do they sound like in non-studio enviroments? AFAIK, studios monitors are really flat in their response. Are they in the same league as Genelecs and Yamahas?

How's the sound in yr setup?

Mine's black .. but the tuner stage died and had been replaced by Asia Sound Equipment.

They sound great. My room's small. As for the flat response, i'm not sure. Whatever genre music i throw at it, it really sounds damn good especially lush 99.5 not too boomy, bassy. Pop and dance, sounds great as well since my friend uses this pair for DJ mixing.

As for comparison to Genelecs and Yamahas, I still prefer the Spirits compared to Yamahas. I have a pair of KRK Systems ST6 studio monitors as well ... they sound more punchy compared to the Spirits.

Im looking to build a music room and am looking for a good speaker system.
Moderate budget.

Just to get some feedback.
Any alternatives?

I used to (but no longer) run a hifi shop at Adelphi.

If you let me know your budget, music preferences, room condition (eg whether you are able to set up speakers far from back wall) etc, I can help you – or anyone else here – achieve very good sound for relatively little money.

If on tight budget, may need to get some used gear. In general, anything above $3K for complete system can be very good if know how to set up. If really tight budget and don't mind used gear, even less can do.

And I am talking about “high-end” audiophile quality sound, far far better than Bose system.
