we've got iWork and iWeb. 'nuff said. :)

After 21 posts, you guys still have not answered my desired question.

I'm asking you all whether do you all feel spending that kind of money worth it for you?

Simple yes or no answer. Tell me why yes or why no.

No need to go into details why switching over to Mac worth it or not.

I uses Mac since '89. Yes it is worth spending tt kind of money as spec-to-spec, u r not paying more for a Mac. Also, some of the basic software come pre-loaded. There is no carzy 'catch-up' to do as Mac dun juz simply trying to out-clock, so your investment stays with you longer. Also, the fact that it is so stable (Hradware, OS and Applications) save u many heartache.

In my research so far, you would be getting a more powerful computer for the same price. I'm not comparing macbooks, but macbook pros to what is available with notebook PCs and macbook pro to what you could possibly get with a windows desktop. For a similar price, you can get a extreme Intel Core 2 Quad processor and a Terabyte HDD as well as a graphics card that can equal or better than what Apple is offering.

So far also, my laptop of 6 years is still running pretty well and I am not running any firewalls nor have I checked the HDDs for viruses for more than 2 years.

That is the dilemma that I'm in. The only reason why I'm looking at a mac is because it seems that apple has just built its brand as a culture in the photography and graphics industry.

seriously if it makes you happy, just continue what you are using. :)

very straight forwardly, not worth getting a mac. main reason: expandability & upgradeability.

everytime u want a higher spec hardware, u end up buying a whole new set. imagine u have the imac 17", u'll need to buy a whole new set just to go 20" or 24". same for the mac pros, if u want the higher clock speed or quad core, its another new set from the basic set.

hardware vendor also very limited, eg. if u want to run RAID for reduncy or speed or both. sound cards? which mac models can support such expandabilities?

software wise, mac office 04 STE = ~$260, XP office STE = ~$180. both do exactly the same thing on diff platform.

lastly, hardware & software chase is very individual. u dun need to follow the latest & greatest out there, both platforms will advance. i'm still using very old CD ripper & Nero 6 (not even those 6.x ver or 7) running on a low end dual core 805D with XP (enuf to run Vista too). when there's a need, i can upgrade to the C2D or go quad core, no need to buy a whole new set. :D

the best part is... u can install OS X onto the intel hardware that runs natively. whatever hardware upgrade u do (incl over clocking), the OS X automatically gets a performance boost

My GF only does her web stuffs on Frontpage, and Mac OSX office don't have Frontpage.. That's the reason! :)

if she cannot learn a new software then run windoze on a PeeCee
instead of on a Mac

actually if you are interested in the hardware tech stuff you can actually upgrade a mac with PC parts, you just need to know how and what

not as upgradable as a Pee Cee but there is no need to.

I think people like me buy a mac with a view to have it work for me for at least 4 years, without a need to upgrade or expand.

That's why I said that alot of old timer Mac user like me buy what I need, and we dun buy to just keep up with the trend.

Er...is this legal? After I read the user agreement of Apple, dun think this is legal right? If it is illegal, I think it is redundant to have brought this point.

But seriously, we should buy a computer to work for us, not the other way ard. So, if one is comfortable with a certain system such as Windows or MacOS, and they serve our purpose and intent, I think we should just stick to it lor.

whether the hardware can last u 4 yrs or not, is everyone guess. count urself lucky if it did.

legal? definitely... as long as u register as a developer with apple. is it legal to install XP on apple specific hardware? i dun know but many people have done it w/o giving a care.

u either DIY or buy turnkey sys to work for u, not much of this way round or that way round to talk about. juz like taking a pic, u can pose a product to ur liking (full control) or u can take nature where u can't have any control at all (weather, birds, etc). which shud be the way to take a pic? which shud be the way to buy or use a computer? i also said its very individual if they want to keep up with the trend or not (both hardware & software). ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with XP or mac. u use PS 7, CS, CS 2 or CS 3 on ur mac? see... its a matter of personal choice.

coming back to the TS question... my opinion is... not worth getting a mac. prefer to go the cheaper more open route. the end results is the same, doesn't mean u use mac office 04, the excel sheet will be error free.

whoa. then I guess alot of people are very lucky loh. =)

not lucky...its a fact. i have a g3 mac which i upgraded to g4 subsequently. it served me well for 5 years before i upgraded to a dual cpu g4. the current set is still serving me very well even processing 25meg fuji raws without fuss. much more than i can say for my 2 yr old P4 which is way way obsolete at this point. i would have started up both my pc and g4 and processed a couple of fuji raws before my p4 is up and ready for use.

i agree with hobbit6003. you need to make the computer work for you and not the other way around. the amount of money i wasted on the pc would have been better spent on photography.

there r also alot of people not lucky... u dun see them dun mean never existed. have u been to their back room in the repair center? u also need to check with apple what is the service now for old products, owners also won't bring in those old products for repaired when they know apple no longer service them. that doesn't not equate to lasting products. also simple stats will tell u how much u sell will generate how much failure. PeeCee have many failure but when u look at the sheer stats, its not unreasonable.

another thing to take note is the person behind the DIY PeeCee.

no wanting to OT too much.. i still say not worth buying mac. refer to ealier post for reasons. and pls, if u dun upgrade ur mac, dun assume all mac users dun like upgrading. i have frens who owns many macs at home fyi, they must have the cutest, the latest mac. too much money? i wudn't say so... its a matter of personal choice.

yes I have.

The question is: Have you been to a back room of a PC repair centre?

whoa. I got say meh? dun put words in my mouth horh. thank you. =)

PC or Mac doesn't matter to me... as long as it gets the job done, its  .

Cost to cost, a Mac is usually more expensive than a pc with equivalent specs (with the exception of the Macbooks). That said, I'd estimate the higher end Macs costs not more than 20% than a pc these days. Part of the reason is they are using more common parts, especially the new Intel Macs, which are easily able to work with "normal" PC RAM and external Hard drives.

If you approach buying a computer from a purely rational point of view, then a PC would seem to be more ost effective. Howver, do remember this, with Mac OSX, you save on having to buy Anti-virus software which is a must for Windows users.

But I hope you consider making the purchase from more than simple economics and rationalisation. There are all the intangible factors that make using a Mac worth much more than that 20% mentioned earlier. Most of us spend alot of our time and lives on the computer whether we like it or not. Since we are going to spend that amount of time, I'd rather my computing experience be as pleasant as possible. And that's the intangible value that makes paying more for a mac worth it. It's the whole computing experience. No longer is using a computer a chore but a joy and that, to me, is priceless.

a computer is a personal experience... if Mac works for you it is worth it... if PC works for you it is worth it... can't really take someone else's justification of price...

so if you find one working for you, good for you and just use it :)

bingo, i remember seeing a report from cnet saying mac is about 18% pricer than a equiv PC. but that was like 1yr ago =x

Haha, I must very lucky myself indeed.:) My 1989 Mac Classic, my 1993 Mac IICX is still working for me indeed. I just dusted my PowerMac 8600 tonight and guess what, it booted! Woo, must go buy toto liao!:D

Unfortunately for many end users like me, I dun have the privy to be a developer for Apple and hence I think it would be illegal for me to 'mod' a pc to run Mac OS la.

And also the point here is whether is legal to do so or not, not whether it is possible to do so. Thus, being legal and people doing it without care are 2 big different issues altogether.

Btw, yes, it is perfectly legal to instal Windows XP on the Intel Mac, either through Bootcamp in its beta version, or through virtualisation programme like virtual desktop.

However, I must agree with you that it doesn't matter which comp system one is using, as long as it gets the job done and you're comfortable and feel justifiable with it lor.

It is also true that many Mac converts these days (switchers as one would call it), are indeed cutest and latest Macs. Why, they simply have 'Port' their PC mentality over lor.;p

At the end of the day, it is just human nature that if one gets comfy with a certain system, one is reluctant to change la. Thus, it makes you just as correct as I do.

Well said, eel.
