No one playing the "My favourite photo taken with a Zeiss lens for 2012"?
cool! pls share some photos
Unfortunately, I have not been able to use the Distagon 15mm much due to weather and family.
Initial thoughts are that its much lighter and less bulky then my Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8, which makes it a easier to handle and bring. Lens feels balanced with my D800E
(without grip). With the 14-24mm, the setup was a little front heavy. 95mm filters are expensive. I managed to get a Zeiss UV for $360 locally. That's a cool $100 cheaper than those selling on eBay. B+W equivalent costs around $250. Still deciding if I should get the polariser.
Sharpness is very good wide open, better than the 14-24mm but there is heavy vignetting which is gone when stopped down to f/5.6. At f/8 and beyond, the 14-24mm is marginally sharper. A bit of a surprise here but its more than enough for my requirements. Curvilinear distortions are definitely better controlled on the 15mm. Images require very little (if any) correction. Haven't checked on CA yet but was told that is pretty well controlled too on the 15mm. Colour rendition is a bit neutral but I have not done enough to determine that yet.
If you asked if the 15mm was worth over $4k, I'd say it is for me because of its weight, size and curvilinear distortions control but this lens made me realised that the 14-24mm is one of those with the greatest bang for the buck around.
Will be bring the 15mm out to work tomorrow and hopefully, weather's good.
