There is really nothing wrong with AF, its just that Zeiss lenses are at or near the pinnacle of lens design IMO.
I think what you got hooked up on was the bokeh and sharpness of ZE lenses and the "pop" factor that usually accompanies them.

However MF isn't suitable for all situations. Unless you really know your lenses and predict/anticipate what's going to happen and prepare for it. Otherwise AF is certain quicker and more suited for event photography. You should not just dismiss all AF lenses, there are exceptions. ;)

Well, I was at Chinggay parade with my kid for 5 minutes, and I failed miserably using AF, zero, and switching to MF got me the shots. This of course was my fault, I have been using MF too long that switching to AF was a bit strange for a while and it was taking some time to get out of the disorientation. 5 minutes only so went back to the comfort zone of MF. But, I agree with you, ideally, this kind of dim light (zone focusing is definitely out) fast-moving subjects event needs a good and fast AF system, and superb high ISO, fast lens, as well as positioning ...

These r d times when native Nikon or canon lenses comes into good use for AF.

When I travel without my kids, I prefer using my legacy glass n MF. The results are just better to me plus photography becomes a more fun experience. For events n my kids I prefer my AF lenses.

Ultimately, you use the correct tool for the respective job.
If you're used to MF, then of course, its better not to go out of your comfort zone.
The object is to get the shot...however you can...whether AF or MF.

Anyway, speaking of Zeiss C/Y 50mm f/1.7, some images from it :

Is the vignetting induced? Almost bought this lens last night but withdrawn at the last minute.

Oh, yes, it is ...

Buy, one of the best C/Y lenses, IMHO. Some images in review below. Of course, only if you want the focal length. I prefer it over the famous 85mm f/1.4, while some are content with the 85mm. The newer Zeiss 100mm F2 Makro-Planar is more versatile with its macro feature, though, but it will be more expensive.

Coincidentally, the lens that I almost could have bought is from Mr Pebbleplace. Yes, he has sold his 100/2. I have seen his review many years ago though he does update it. He has sold and bought back the Planar 100 for 6-7 times, which goes on to show the dilemma this lens puts one into. For me, I have done the opposite of him, preferring to not pick it up when the urge comes calling. And it has, many times. I should probably buy it, knowing Zeiss is unlikely to reproduce this lens in ZE since they have merge it into Makro Planar 100, though both renders differently. But then should I save my money for ZE 135/2 APO. Dilemma! :-)

Yes, buy the 135f2 APO and wait for the updated 85f1.4.

Yes sir. 135 APO is in sight but I am very happy with the Contax N 85. Don't think I need to change it. Also the rumoured new 85 is supposedly in the same range as the 55/1.4. Don't think I want to spend S$5k on a lens.

Hi Members,
I need some help from all of you. Recently I've bought a Ricoh GXR with m mount but I wanted to use my Zeiss ZE planar T with it, which is a Canon mount.
Can you recommend the best match adapter for these two equipments and where do get it? Thank you so much!

I do not think it is possible. ZE comes with fly-by-wire electronic controlled aperture. AFAIK, only EF to Nex is possible.

[edit] There is a EF-Ricoh M, but I still don't think you can use it with ZE without a method to control the aperture.

sorry about the poor focusing, i was on Magic Lantern Trap Focus and it inadverantly triggered focus lock when focused on the stem of the flower instead of the flower head itself
