Anyone still doing or interested in Large Format?

I've rescanned the image at higher resolution. Anyone know of any image host which allows for large image files? Cause the images are

Hey, thank you so much for welcoming and introducing me to the group. Next weekend unfortunately I will again not be able to join your outing as we're going on a short trip to KL. Will try to join one of the next outings

Hi sfink.

You're welcome.

We're shooting THIS weekend, not next weekend. ;)

Let's see...me ish dufus when it comes to math, so what does a 4 inch by 5 inch original, scanned at 4,800dpi at 48-bit depth colour work out to in terms of a 300ppi X meters by x meters enlargement?

 :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

That 25600 x 19200 dpi image is 2.17 x 1.63 meters for 300ppi printing ... Which actually isn't really very large after all :) ...

But that is really huge when viewed on your 72dpi monitors ...

YEAH I GOT A TRIPOD, but one leg needs some tweaking :3

Woots ... the image failed to upload ... zzz, anyway trying another site ...

thank u Dream Merchant, must join u guys next time & check it out how u guys do it..many pros comes from enthusiast level though;p

DM: bo bian leh, finding pre world war 2 holders damn stress. hahaha

On a brighter note, another 4X5 (confirmed whew) is coming and will join you guys once it does. It's a polaroid 110b converted similar to razzledog and littman(hope he does not google this and flame me). This one has a graflok, whew.

Yeah, that's a problem with really old and/or obscure equipment. Imagine if repairs, parts and servicing was needed.

There are options - for refurbishing, repairs and so on overseas, but these are usually cottage industry craftsmen and sometimes, the backlog can be as long as a year or more before one's camera gets done. Cost, as you can imagine, would be quite high since shipping and insurance would not be cheap.

In general, unless a person knows how to DIY or build, I wouldn't recommend really old or obscure cameras or gear. Even the repair or servicing of shutters may present a major problem ... unless there's someone in SG that can do it competently.

Good thing your new acquisition has an International back. That's one pretty important area taken care of.

You do seem to like not so 'mainstream' equipment I notice, 'mainstream' being a relative term.

Yes, the cost is unbelievable for the refurb and mods, but of course you can expect quality products in return. These craftsmen are very dedicated in perfecting their design and puts 101% effort in your camera. But as mentioned, the backlog is horrible , I once had to wait 6 months for a ground glass! However when you receive it, you can almost feel the work he had put into it. They are of a rare breed nowadays.

here are some LF related craftsmen
- Razzledog , 4X5 polaroid mod (one of the best around)
- Byron , 4X5 polaroid mod (relatively new but with new ideas for the mod, interchangeable lens etc)
- GVB ground glass, good ground glass from belgium
- shutter for barrel lenses, you can find it on evilbay

Chris, I confess, I'm a magic bullet chaser  cant help it :dunno:

I like to think of myself as a travel/portrait photographer and i want to find a camera that suit all my needs, which results in weird cameras that only i find it good to use.

I first tried LF with a graphic view and although the results are worth it, It just doesn't suit. Then its the speed graphic, which is closer to what i want, but still clumsy for handheld. I gave up LF, until this great thread was born, and i got sucked back it. Not complaining thou! :bsmilie:

Ultimately, equipment and gear, as well as technique is largely personal. :sweatsm:

I personally won't say that chasing a magic bullet is an entirely bad thing, especially when it comes to something as technical as large format, but I guess eventually, we all have to strike a balance because there comes a point where the chase gets in the way of creating photographs.

Thanks for those links. I am sure it would be very useful to anyone who needs parts or services!

Yay, finally I get a chance to see my Sinar F1!

The condition is slightly below what I've expected, but its damn beautiful!

CONGRATULATIONS on your new toy! :cheergal::rbounce::gbounce:

You mean the item wasn't accurately described? E-bay? I would suggest clear photos and contacting the seller before leaving feedback. Sometimes, with the ethical sellers, they would offer to make it right.

Just a lot more dust than I've imagined. And one missing screw.

And I just made myself a pinhole cardboard lens!
DAMN IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOYAAAAAAAAAA.

Need to get list -
1/4-20 to 3/8" Bushing to mount the Sinar F1 on Patrick's Rugged Tripod
Cut Film Holder
Pack of 25 EPP I accidentally left in my friend's fridge.

P.S. : Can't get the image in focus Q_Q ...

Jay, this cherry wood Tachihara 4x5 field includes the
5x7 back which is a bonus for you.

Here are some details about the camera at the kenrockwell site:

"If you are concerned about professional quality for your landscape
shots you'd be far better off with this Tachihara 4 x 5 than
any 12 - 22 MP DSLR for over ten times the cost.
Add a $400 EPSON 4990 scanner and you have a
complete 100 MegaPixel digital camera system, with far
better highlight rendition and native perspective control."

http://kenrockwell.com/tech/tachihara.htm

It's still worth getting it looking at the condition.
Go for it if you really want a light weight field camera.
