70-200 2.8IS will be back to 3k. it was the introductory price I think.

Maybe they increase price of the lens but introduce some cheaper consumer/prosumer point and shoot cameras?

Or lower price of the camera body?

Razor-blade selling theory. Sell the razor cheap and make the blade expensive. Many companies use such a business model.

Sounded very MBA. I like that theory. While thinking about it, if we going to get pay cut or our money getting de-valued and things are getting more expensive.... what would that translated to.......... it sounds very much like 1930s...... while if this is true then we ought to start spending and buying more gold.....

I am still waiting for an image-stabilized, >150 mm, true 1:1 macro lens.

Common examples of razor-blade business models are:
HP Printers -> printer around $100 bucks, black+color catridge $100odd, last abt 2 months max.

HEY BROS!

I've noticed most of the shops now becoming a bit of an oligopoly: meaning they seems to be colluding with one another to agree to increase the price! There is only 1 way to break this monopoly: we neeed to 'hup chap' here: all the bros here need to share which shop is offering really good price . aka undercutting the oligopolies, and share it with other bros in CS, that's the only way to break the mono, oligopolies becos if we all support the shop/shops that offer cheap prices, their 'high price' monopoly will not be sustainable. Similarly, if any bros here wan to venture into parallel importing biz selling lens at cheaper prices, I first one to support: there's good biz opportunity to undercut these big boys, margins will not be big, but can make decent living wif volume: give those shops some competition to bring down the prices... heck in recessionary times like these, cost of production is coming down faster than the appreciating yen, all those talk about rising yen is marketing bollocks to try to change customer perception. Remember, japan economy has never been worse, they are in deflationary state and prices are dropping faster than its appreciation, and the jap central banks will never allow the yen to appreciate too much as it will affect their exports and competitiveness. My opinion from previous decade in finance. Down wif the Lens Prices Shop owners!:thumbsd:

I don't think the price would go up until 40%..

I was told like that last year too but in the end the price dropped..

Hi Bro Lioneldude, pls don't take any offence of my last comments. I do agree with with many product houses have started to adopt with the razor-blade business.

yes agree.

Just use a simple logical thinking. In my opinion photography is something that is "good to have" and can live our lives jolly without. If the economy going to fall short in the coming months, what would you choose? Bread or Photography?

if the rumours are true and prices will increase by 30-40% it'll be very tough for us loh. personally, if i aint shooting for $$ and more for habit, i dont think i'll be upgrading my lenses... :sticktong

i am holding back my purchase for 70-200mm F2.8 :bsmilie:

Calling for Oracle back :bsmilie::bsmilie:

The market force will eventually dedicate the price point to a level that majority consumers can accept. When Canon (and Nikon) reduced their price last year, a lot of people were saying it is due to the pressure from parallel importers and people getting their lenses/flash units from lower price locations such as Hong Kong, Japan and USA and thus undercutting the local shops' business.

So, this time around, if Singapore Canon (and Nikon) is going to raise their price, I think the same situation will happen. i.e. a lot of people will be getting their gears elsewhere other than the local authorized dealers.

I also bought my 70-200 f2.8IS from HK at around $2.3K (when the exchange rate was at 1S$=HK$5.7) early last year before Singapore Canon reduce their price. I noticed the price gap are pretty small after the Singapore Canon price reduction. This couple with the stronger US$ (HK$ is pegged to US$), it make sense to buy locally again.

I wonder would there be an increase in price in other countries as well?

well, it kinda depends. lets hope not.

If I am not wrong the increase is due to the exchange rate... if so it would affect other countries as well... right?
