Can someone give me a quick education on e-mount. Which brands are using this natively, and for adapters for manual lenses is there focus confirmation?

Afaik, any Sony experts pls correct me here or miss out anything.. E mount currently only has Sony lenses for AF lenses, 18-55,18-280,16. Soon to be launched 24/1.8 Carl zeiss, 30f3.5 sony macro, samyang fish eye 8/3.5(no AF).

For legacy lenses, will need adapters. To retain AF only Sony A mount SAM/SSM will have AF with LA-EA1 adapter, but the recent announced LA-EA2 will AF fast with almost all Sony/minolta A mount.
Other brands no AF, focus confirmation can be done with a AF confirmation chip, and certainly needs adapter and usually can be bought cheaply from eBay. If it's non-sony dslr lens, not possible change aperture from nex, manual lenses on other hand allows changing of aperture, focusing is done manually from mechanically coupled focus ring. Hope that helps

thanks for that.

a) manual lenses
means that there's much less quality risk if the adapters for the manual lenses don't have electrical contacts. downside of course is lack of AF confirmation.
so what mode to shoot on manual lenses ?

b) e-mount
- native connection very limited range it seems; what about tokina and sigma?
- A mount lenses are a bit large; any small barrelled lenses that keeps within rangefinder physical specs?

isn't focus peaking AF confirmation? It seems pretty accurate to me

can someone post a pic of the bag from sony as part of the nex-5 package? want to see how it looks like.
was told by MSC that it is brown though. correct?

It's 18-200 not 18-280. Slr magic also make a fully manual 35/1.7 lens for e mount.

Focus peaking only works in MF mode hence its not an AF confirmation.

there's still a shutter in mirror-less cameras FYI

Mirror-less, not shutter-less

My bad.

I use either aperture-priority or manual mode with manual lenses. AF confirmation is really redundant as I find the peaking function quite useful and sufficient for my needs.

So far, there are no tokina and sigma lenses for the NEX. If you are interested in small barrelled lenses that keeps within rangefinder physical specs, i would strongly suggest that you try out the M-mount lenses which are MF only.

Focus peaking and AF confirmation are two different technologies. AF confirmation enables the camera AF confirmation indicator when you turn the focusing ring manually until the subject gets focus.

Haha ya it's 18-200. Sorry

Hi Bros,

I am going to HK end of the month. Anyone bought the Nex 5D in HK can tell me how much does it cost (without warranty)

Focus peaking works in both manual and DMF mode(auto but also allows manual).. Anyway, we are talking about manual focus so the term AF confirmation is wrong. So, I was guessing he is talking about Focus indicator which indicates if the target is in-focus or not hence peaking acts as the focus indicator

Dont really understand what are you talking. AF = Auto Focus? Auto Focus confirmation indicator when you turn the focus ring manually? Which mode are you in? In AF mode, focus ring does nothing. In manual mode, there is not AF confirmation indicator but focus peaking. In DMF mode + flex-spot, it will AF based on your focus point selection and give green confirmation upon focusing but once you turn the focus ring, you dont get any more green confirmation but you still have focus peaking.

Overall, you use focus peaking as your "in-focus area indication"

any bro here tried 5N + RAYNOX DCR-250?

Focus confirmation: de "beep" sound with steady green light to inform u dat focus has been achieved. Works in full AF & DMF mode.
Focus peaking: de glowing light dat shows u which area is currently in focus. Works in both MF & DMF mode.

yup.. with kit lens, it will vignetting at wide angle.. I think around 50mm is where there is no more vignetting

I thought the question was:

so we know its manual lenses doing manual focusing, so my answer to that is focus peaking..
