My intent was to know opinions of people who had really use and experience (not over some shop counter) both lenses. Thanks for the suggestion anyhow. ;)
hi bro, I had a 20D + 17-40 about 2 years ago, and was seriously considering selling it off for 17-55. But before i could do that both got stolen :dunno: just last week i bot a 40D and 17-55 lens, and i can tell you it's a wiser choice than 17-40. Yes the build and butter-smooth zooming is better on the L, but I rather take the f/2.8 + IS + extra 15mm anyday. IQ wise I dare say the 17-55 is at least as good as, if not better than the 17-40.

my 2 cents :)

So sorry to hear that. Can feel your pain.

Build, butter-smooth zooming (and not FF compatible) is probably the main thing most people complaint about the 17-55. Of course these doesn't affect the IQ which is most important. Base on specs, the 17-55 will be a more versatile lens.

Hope to hear more from bros and not forgetting sis :bsmilie: who had the experience on both lenses to share their take on it.

I reall really miss the butter smooth zoom.......

Appreciate more comments on focus performance, colour etc. Is the non-weatherproof build that poor?
Am seriously thinking about purchasing the 17-55. Have tried 16-35 and love it but it's way over my budget.

Colour - Just as good as any L lens.... since they all use the same UD glass.

Focus - Just as good, since both are using USM.

Weather Seal - Non to speak of..... but I would said as good as most other Non L lens.

Build - Can't compare with L lens of course.... but NOT in anyway 'Bad'. No shaking parts or badly joined areas. Mostly build in good quality polycarbonate plastic.... unlike L lens magnesium-alloy constructions. And of course.... the 17-55mm Zoom ring isn't as 'Butter Smooth' as those of the L lens.

Anyone experienced with zoom creep on 17-55?

pls correct me if i'm wrong.. but i read from somewhere before that if your camera itself is not weather-sealed then having a weather-sealed lens doesn't make much difference? :dunno:

17-55 has the same kind of build as 10-22? i've played around with the latter and i dont like its plasticky feel... think i shall rent a 17-55 tomorrow to play with b4 i decide to buy it. is the zoom noisy?

i've not used the 10-22 before so i dunno if it's the same feel..

but the zoom is quiet coz it's using USM

the zoom is as quiet or as noisy as you want to make it when turning the zoom ring with your hand. USM has nothing to do with zooming, it makes the focusing quieter, that's all.

ah sorry! my bad.. read too fast.. i thought he was asking about focusing.. :p

http://www.lensplay.com/lenses/lens_weathersealed.html

if your lens is weather-sealed, then your lens can be exposed to the elements, but your body (needs a 1D/1Ds 'pro' series body for that) will not be sealed.

anyway the 17-40 lens needs a 77mm filter before it is considered sealed.

Zoom shift when you point up or down due to gravity

Ooh.... that :bsmilie:

Yeah... I was worry about it too. Did some 'Test' at home.... nothing yet. Maybe unlike those lense like 18-200mm, 18-270mm... etc, the moveable parts ain't that 'heavy'.

17-55 was not born when I got the 17-40 and 16-35 is too ex. No chance to be silly :bsmilie:

Same here - in 2004, there was no 17-55....

17-85 which lighter than 17-55, can have zoom creep

That bad ?? :dunno:

Well..... the 17-55mm (or at least my set), doesn't have this problem.... maybe for now only
