Anyone considered selling Canon gear and switching to Nikon?

I saw this written somewhere else and sadly it's true -

Lets face the facts : Nikon beat Canon with an advanced focusing system D700
Nikon beats Canon in the high ISO resolution department
Nikon beats Canon in sensor development
Nikon beats Canon in price
And now Nikon beats Canon in the MP high resolution Department D800

Did the guy remain a Canon user though? :D

if someone wants ultimate details n resolving power, actually both nikon D800 n D800E won't actually satisfy.

medium format is the way to go if money is not an issue. Download the full size image of 80 mega pixels phase one 645 here.

TS seems too fixated in the obsolete/outdated 老土 concept of Nikon against Canon forum-message-fight. Trolling is so....boring. Seems unable to see beyond brand.

Let me ask you again...does this impress you?
NatureScapes.Net • View topic - Big D800 Crop

Actually, that does NOT impress me much. With the right lens and skills, even a 6 MP camera can capture such details.

I have also seen many D800 landscape photos and I can tell you this much: I am NOT impressed. Why? Because when I look at leaves of distant trees, they STILL look like green mush. There is no clear definition like what I have seen from those high pixel count medium format cameras. This should come as no surprise since it's already been shown there's only a 27% increase in spacial resolution between the 5D3 & D800 with primes under the best circumstances.

Well, the 5D3 AF is better than the D800 in low light.
The 5D3 has high ISO performance as good as D800. Same goes for 7D/60D vs D7000/D5100.
The 600D has better high ISO performance than D3200.
The 7D has better performance than the D300s.
The 5D3 is CHEAPER than the D800 in Singapore.

As for sensor resolution, it's just a matter of time.

The only area where Canon really lags Olympus/Sony/Nikon/Pentax is low ISO dynamic range. But this is not new. Remember Canon is the last company to offer remote flash control capability with on-board flash? We can only hope Canon will catch up soon. Remember, not too long ago, Canon owners used to be able to say this to Olympus/Sony/Nikon/Pentax users: why do your shots look so horrible at high ISO while mine is smooth and detailed?

I do not know if you are a highly skilled troll or not (and I have seen many of them), but many of your arguments hold no water.

This fotoworx seems to be the same fotoworx on POTN. I wonder he has yet to create such a thread with a similar agenda on that forum.

The questions asked by TS is loaded and try to stir up a brand war which he already succeed

I think It's time for me to try a D800 for a day or so.

I'm having the 5D Mark III and it is working as promised. Decent AF, acceptable file quality, and basically an honest as-is improvement from the 5D2. The only thing that really sucks in the 5D Mark III is that the AF points don't have individual LEDs, so it's either all lit or all black. Even the E-TTL flash performance has improved and about on par with previous generation Nikon flash exposure. If you are having any AF issues send it in to canon and they will help you to fine-tune everything. Your lenses may not be calibrated properly to work well on this new body.

I did try the D800 at nikon service centre and noticed that most AF issues are a result of users not being able to do their own AF micro-adjustment so they complain the AF is inaccurate/imprecise. Once they fix the left-right unstable AF point issue, I'm think it might be as good or even better in terms of AF precision compared to 5D Mark III. Remember we are viewing a 36 mpx file and not 22 mpx. With regards to AF point selection (affecting precision), 5D Mark III has the spot AF feature which edges out the D800 slightly.

Regarding dynamic range, the D4 and D800 files take much better pulling especially in the darks and shadows. This is indisputable and the 2nd biggest gripe I have with the 5D Mark III.

Frankly speaking, I think that only 10% of users will ever need the advantages that Nikon has with it's D800 over the 5D3.

If you don't shoot RAW, don't want to do serious color editing in RAW, don't use Auto-ISO (abit easy to use in the D800), or don't know how to micro-adjust your lenses, no point considering to jumpship to the D800 from 5D3.

I am considering switching over from Nikon to Canon even from the day of 5D Mk II :)

I am a stickler for colours and sharpness. To me, Canon has the colours and Nikon, the sharpness it seems.

For some reason, Canon colours look more whimsical, brighter and softer to me.

Nikon pictures seldom look that way to me.

But the more potent reason for me to think about the switch is the poor or nil after-sales at Nikon. It just doesn't feel very good about paying the bucks to keep incompetent people in their jobs.

The switch would be a major move because it's a system we are talking about, so I'm still thinking.

Out of interest, do you shoot jpg?

Let us know how you go with it.

Bro... seriously, why don't you rent yourself a D800/ D800E and try it out yourself. If it is really that massively good as compared to Canon's 5DmkIII, by all means, jump ship to Nikon.

I loved the D800... I loved cameras from Nikon, but I have no intention to jumpship... why? I find Canon serving me as I expected and I find that is good enough a reason for me to stay on with Canon. If you really feel that Canon had short changed you, then there really is no need to start a thread and asked for justification into you wanting to change... because none of us here could or would try to change your mind over which camera brand to go to.

Cheers.

It's just a discussion......thats what this part of the forum is for, discussing photography gear. It's one small fun part of the entire spectrum of what 'we' photographers do.

In all honesty. It's a rare photographer that has never pondered using another brand of gear would you not agree? Thats why comparison threads have always and will always be so popular. It's what makes photography forums vibrant, it's what sells photography magazines and in the end.....it's what sells cameras.

So to all those who have never considered selling their gear and switching brands.....why are you even bothering to post in this thread let alone read it? The thread title should have given people ample warning about the content of the thread...no? Yet the "trolls" flocked here like bee's to honey and called myself as the thread starter the "troll".

If you're not interested and the thought has never crossed your mind, can't you just leave this thread well enough alone? Or are you one of those people that see a wet paint sign and just has to touch the paint to really see if its wet and then complain that you have paint on your fingers?

I agree with you fully. Yes, it is fun to compare cameras and stuff like that... and I normally don't resort to calling others troll or whatsnot.

I mean, I do always ponder in other brand's camera... but I am one who would go ahead and give other brands a try. I have played with Nikon, Olympus (owned 2 of it now), Panasonic, Pentax and Sony. But I always come back to my Canon. Like I say, I like Canon, it is a very personal feels. I am also not here to try to change anyone's sentiments toward Nikon and Canon... just a personal feel.

Yeah, after reading from many of the threads, I seriously find that you are very very unhappy with Canon, and my advise to you is to rent a Nikon or whatsoever and shoot with it for a couple of days, then decide if Nikon serve your better than your Canon...

(PS. From my own amature point of view, I don't think MP value counts that much for my usage, so with 2XMP, I find that plenty already... actually I find my 7D's 18MP good enough for most of what I am shooting. I don't need that high a resolution and stuff like that... and if really one of these days, I need that type of resolution, I would go for the Medium Format... Anyway, D800 is a serious beast, my bro in Aust had put an order for it bcos he needed the resolution but cannot afford a medium format, so... yeah.)

You kept emphasize on you're comparing/discussing.. But from what i can see and read. To me at least. You've gone way far and beyond that.
hmm... I really don't understand and I'm actually quite surprise people are still replying and this thread is still on the front page.

It's yr money , it's yr life ....

If you want to change ... go ahead a change to D800 .... there's nothing wrong and it's NOT a SIN ... I did .... ( from Nikon to Canon and now Pentax and maybe going back to Nikon D800E )

rhino I love Canon. My MPE 65mm, my two macro flashes just can't be beaten by another competitor. My 135mm is just a wonderful lens etc etc etc

But I would be lying if I said that I'm not worried about Canons future at the moment. I really hope that they haven't forgotten us still photo guys. Video improvements don't mean the slightest thing to me (though I can appreciate how they do to other people).

I'm just not feeling that Canon is the leader of dslr technology like they have been. My investment is huge with Canon, realistically I can't sell everything (and I don't want to) there's just too much gear and I would honestly find it pretty much impossible to part with it, but I still ponder, day dream, fantasize ....call it what you will about swapping over. Even though I know that in real world results I would NOT see any difference.

I don't print massive prints (never ever have I printed a massive print for my or someone elses wall).
I can't tell that any photo has been shot with such and such a body or lens.
I have a small fortune invested in top end Canon gear.
I don't get hung up on DR.
I do really like the ability to crop deep into an image and still have a wonderful image. So for me high mp is something that I would like.

Am I a malcontent? I seriously must be :( I just hope that Canon can turn *SOME* things around and make me feel that I have invested wisely. Until that day I'll probably keep thinking about how green the grass is on the other side of the fence like lots of us do.

I sold my canon to switch to olympus.
