After much reading up and getting some reviews (and also some saving) I've finally decided on the 3 lenses mentioned below:-

1. Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3 EX
2. Sigma 17-35mm f2.8- 4 EX
3. Sigma 105mm Macro f2.8 EX

But before I finally commit myself and my hard earned $$$, can any of the pros or semi-pros here give any advice as to whether I should or should not get any of the lenses.

Please help. Thanks a million guys!!!

Cheers!!!

P/S:- My budget is actually $3000. Can I get the above 3 for that price?:dunno:

No experience with this lens (or the other lenses you list, for that matter), but does this lens fit into your shooting style? Or are you suffering from more-zoom-range-is-better? :D

For me, I like mobility, so handholdability is very important. This lens looks to me like it would be too slow to handhold comfortably.

Just wondering, at which focal length does the lens go to f/4.5, f/5.6 and f/6.3?

If you can read chinese, there are some reviews of these lenses and Sigma HK website. These reviews might be biased though.

There are also reviews of these lenses at the Taiwan independent photography website. www.photosharp.com

Nah, i'm not suffering from more-zoom-range-is-better syndrome. :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie: Just that when I go to places like the zoo or BP, i would like the comfort of getting "close" to the objects without getting too close.

I was actually considering the Nikkor 80-200mm AFS but thats way outta my budget.

Then Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX and Nikkor AFD 80-200mm f/2.8 N should be in your consideration too, right?

Yeah, i did/(MAYBE still am) consider the Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8 N. But comparing it to the AFS one, is there loads of difference in the quality of the images?? It's about nearly half the price. Everyone I spoke to seems to be using the AFS one.

Before the AFS, every pro is using this AFD and its design has remain unchanged since its first push pull generation (more than 10 years?).

I have owned this lens before, is satisfied with the results of it. Didn't have the chance to compare with the AFS version though (too expensive).

Many are still using this lens...and is very much sort ofter in the 2nd hand market.

This lens is heavy...thus I can't imagine using the Sigma 50-500mm...saw it before...is really huge and long when zoom to 500mm.

Aye!! saw it before too!! looks hell-of-a scary when it's at full zoom!!! :o

The Nikkor AFD-n 80-200/2.8 (2 rings) is as good if not better optically as the AFS version. You might also want to consider Tokina ATX Pro 80-200/2.8.

Nikon and Sigma one can focus down to 1.5m, but Tokina one is 1.7m. Just a note...

I can vouch for the quality of the Nikkor 80-200f/2.8N ED-IF (two ring version with tripod collar) as I used to have this lens and used it extensively together with a 1.4x TC. The quality of the images are indistinguishable from the AFS version.

Sigma has a very good reputation as a 3rd party lens supplier and the lenses you have quoted are very highly regarded. If you have already budgeted for them, then go ahead and make the leap.

based on your lens choices, you have a shooting style similar to mine, where a 80-200 f/2.8 is useless. Never have I been in a situation where 'i wished i had a 80-200 instead of xxx lens'

Don't let all those people tell you you need a 80-200 f/2.8.... make up your own mind on what you plan to shoot.

Thanks Darren, now may consider the 80-200 again. Think I will get the other 2 lenses 1st. And give myself another week or 2 to do more studies on the 80-200 and the 50-500.

Unless, of course anyone has any other comments or views.... please, I am waiting to hear from you guys!!
