Any Recommendation for Micro Hifi $400-$800

Yo.. I tried Onkyo CS325 and CS525... Maybe I not audiophile but I actually prefer the Yamaha...

Son far, I tried the Yamaha Piano craft series at $700+... mid tone is perfect, bass is ok.. I wished I can strip my Creative Titianium tweeters and plug it into the Yamaha.. (If no recession, mai tu liao, I would have gotten that straight..) The wife prefer Yamaha. But I prefer to spend my $ on my lens

The LG is the best price for quality.. it is nothing compared to the Yamaha though.. I dun think the Denon is avaliable at BEST or COURTS.. I will troop down to Sim Lim to try out the Denon.

$500 is also very ex leh, with little functionalities, eg, bluetooth playback, USB direct recording and most importantly, the ipod dock.....the LG i think can hit $250-300 price range one....

these tiny systems do wad they do very well, yes, they may not offer that much features. for feature packed system other brands do offer more but dun sound as good, so is the build.

for I-Pod docks, i think Onkyo has but is an add-on item. i've seen I-Pod docks for such systems at Adelphi.

personally i've tend to shy away fromm systems under a certain price, cos when i like that system i hope it'll last for ages. to me, the worse thing is to see my system RIP early.

Bought a LG FB163 from Audio House in Liang Court.

Good decent sound for it's price. Plays DVD, DivX and iPod etc.

Went to Abengz Audio House, first, no price tag, 2nd, it's only placed beside a Plasma....3rd, no special discounts too....at $399.....

but I saw this......

I was window shopping at Best Denki for mini hifi last week.

The sales staff was recommending me Onkyo over the Yamaha piano craft series, even though the latter is more expensive.
Yamaha's Pianocraft actually refers to the design of it series, which evoke the image of a piano, a musical instrument renowed for its superb sound quality.
And the material used for its speakers is intended to resemble the finishes of a finely crafted piano

I would consider the Onkyo series to be classified under the pianocraft series as well since it has the same finishes as Yamaha but not much difference in the sound reproduction. Overall I prefer Onkyo though the bass for Yamaha sounds better. Anyway the sound quality is subjective and based on individual perferences.

The Onkyo under $600 price range seemed to have no popular features like USB, bluetooth or Ipod dock

It cost $120 more for the same model that has USB port..

Anyway, my study room getting abit cluttered so now I am considering space saving options like buying a BETTER sound card for my PC and getting a better pair of 2.1 speakers.

No need plug USB or detect bluetooth device... Blast straight from my music folder

For micro-hifi, I recommend you give the JVC systems that feature the wood cone speakers an audition. Don't compare them to any audiophile equipment but given their limited sizes, they are among the best. I am not sure how much they cost though.

agree. like i've mention earlier the Woodcone series is on par with Denon, Okyo & Yamaha. all very capable compacts! :thumbsup:

if i remember correctly the EX-A10 is about $1000. there was another single deck model that was about $800 but cant find on the official webby liao.

Agreed. I auditioned one of JVC's wood cone based mini/micro-hifis before and sound reproduction was superb.

What brands such as Onkyo & Denon offer is a much better sound quality reproduction (use of better chips, speakers etc). You've got to audition them and hear for yourself. Comparing based on specs alone is no good.

If you're tight on budget and/or willing to compromise quality over features, then mass market brands such as LG should be it for you.

I spoke to my friend's father in law. He mentioned that he saw a Marantz Amplifer for <$200 some time ago (ehh may mean years).. I think I saw a cheap Marantz Amp at Sim Lim too. And he suggest that will leave me with $400 for a decent pair of speakers.

I short listed JBL E20 speakers because thats the only affordable speakers around with titanium tweeters. Anyone have any feedbacks on that?

Any recommended Amps to pair with this?

I managed to get a CD player from my Dad's old Hifi System before he gave up.

While I would recommend the JVC woodcone series, I actually bought myself a pair of Usher Audio S520 speakers (http://www.usheraudio.com/speaker-S-520.html) and paired it with a Dared hybrid integrated amp (can't remember the model). I spent about a week in Taipei every month and remember having paid the equivalent of about S$230 for the speakers with a gloss piano black finish and another S$276 or so for the Dared amp. This amp has a line input and also a USB input. The output from your CD player can be connected to the line input while the USB port can take input from your PC or MP3/iPod player. By doing so, you thus bypass the DAC in the PC and portable player and the digital to analogue conversion is done by the DAC in the Dared amp, which as far as I am concerned is certainly of a higher grade than that in the PC and especially the portable player. Throw in some cheap speaker cables and interconnects and you will have a decent audio system. Aesthetic wise, the S520 speakers are certainly well built and its finish is comparable to much more expensive speakers and the Dared amp with its pair of vacuum tubes that glow is beautiful as well. The S520 comes in a cheaper finish as well and is also available in other colours. However, if you are looking for a remote control, the Dared amp does not have one.

I believe prices in Singapore especially for the S520 speakers are definitely higher but they are not that heavy and you can simply check in them as part of your luggage.

Hi guys

I am looking for a micro hifi for playing music. It will be used to play things like Jazz, Vocals, new age and so on. I do not like too much distortion or too much artificially enhanced sound. I do appreciate metallic tweeters that are crisp. (not playing techno though.. )

1) Any recommended system?
2) Any shops we can go to (like MS colour , John3:16 equivalent?)
3) Any feedback of LG FB163?

One of my colleagues just spend around $500 for a micro hifi and said he was rather disappointed as a bit more can get a much better system with an AMP.

Go to Sinamex and buy a pair of KRK Rokit5 active nearfield monitors, then get a cheap Samsung DVD player to play your CDs. Should cost you less than $600 and give you great sound. I'm more into active monitors instead of amp+passive monitors nowadays.
