Any inexpensive golf sets to recommend?

yeah... maruman is quite well known... and what you say about the clubs are quite true. I think if mpenza is tall, then japanese brand may not be so suitable but i guess the sales person in the pro-shop can advise better than us...

They might not or might be favouring to push certain sets due to higher commission or clearing stock hehe.. So it will be wise to remind them about that and see if they can help in that respect. They don't usually have like various loft angles for any particular models. They are about average out. The best solution would be to pick an western brand for a more steep loft as oppose to a more shallow one from a japanese brand.

By the way in case he is not sure what the loft angle is...it is pertaining to the angle of the shaft to the club head. To keep the clubhead's bottom level with the ground you have to stand closer to the ball or further away depend on the loft angle of the shaft when you are addressing the ball. To only way to get a loft angle to suit your game play would be to get a custom made set. But that is only when you are really good and consistance with your game first.

Incidently, I use to know a golfer that I have played with a few times. He is quite a short guy and small frame. He is a what I would call a scratch player...meaning his handicap is about -1 to -3. He uses lady length shafts for his golf clubs but he can hit and play a mean game..I never won a game playing with him. That's why I hate playing with him much. He makes me and alot others look really bad! heheh

For driver, the loft angle range from 8 to about 13 degrees and the lie is like 56 degrees. As an amateur, I choose a loft angle of 11 degree for the moderately forgiving drive. The lie is more or less standard at 56 degrees.

Thanks for the reminder...you are right. I got my "term" wrong. Seldom use the terms after sometime you take it for granted hehe..

I was referring to the lie angle of the club head in relation to the shaft. I explained it correctly but got the term wrong. It should be the lie angle.

I use a 10 degree loft for my driver. Actually I have been thinking of changing to a 9 degree ...but looking at the price of the better drivers these day...scary hehe. Think I rather get the new 18mm-200mm VR heheh.

Ya, Far east shopping centre (beside Borders book store) is a good place for club huting. Got a clearance Daiwa set (steel shaft) for $399, but without any woods and putter. Add a 3 wood, sand wedge and putter shd be ard $500-$600....

Have you bought your irons and woods yet? So fast already got your putter? heheh Wah the Nike Oz T100 is quite a stylo milo mallet putter. I hope you did not pay alot for it. The Putter, like the Driver is like your "rice bowl" weapons. People usually take the longest time to find the right driver and putter. This two are usually the most often, in the life of your golf game that you buy and change the most. Usually in the begining, best to get a simple basic shape putter to learn how to get comfortable with learning to putt and hold your putter..only when you are pretty constant with your stroke do you start hunting for a putter. And sometime the best putter to suit you might be the ugliest or plain looking one. hehe...but if it holes out a 20 foot putt..who cares! hehe. Anyway...just go easy with your first purchase lah...don;t get too taken by all the high tech talk and which famous pro is using it blah blah..you are just at the begining of your game...spend enough to get you started first..then start to look for the more cool and better stuff a little later down the road.

heheh Nike's history in Golf is very very short. When there was no Tiger Wood..there was no Wood or Irons or Balls in their business model actually heheheh. But they are a fast learner with deep pockets. So they started buying talent for manufacturing and equipment designing too. This is what deep pockets can buy you sometime.

Now, there seems to be a new type called the 2-ball type, which is now getting very popular - lets you align the 3 balls.

Well, if it feels good for you, looks good for you and most of all, get you in with 1 putt, if not at most 2 most of the time, that's the one for you.

Ping Type? I guess you are referring to the peripheral weighted type. I like this and have changed from the blade to this type. Very balance and as it is not as weighted as the malletor the newer 2-ball type mallet, I have more feel and I can dictate the speed of the clubface. In fact it is a good starter putter.

just an update... there're some promos recently for drivers. Golf House and Why Pay More are selling AdamsGolf Redline/Redline RPM 460cc drivers at $199, AdamsGolf RPM 430Q at $349, Mizuno MP001 460cc at $399 and Taylor Made R5 Dual at $480, while Golfer's Network is selling the Taylor Made R7 Quad at $429. Thought they were quite good buys.
