Here's a shootout for all the three 3rd party f2.8 lens. It's in Chinese though...

After reading, see if you still want the Tokina ;)

My Chinese CMI lah :bsmilie:
But ater reading photozone's distortion, vigenetting, MTF charts and blah blah I have a rough idea of how they compare.

But whatever it is, Tamron is out of the question for me anytime.

The only, ONLY fight may be between tokina and sigma, but I think I prefer Tokina's build quality over Sigma and the extra 16mm to go wider.

am currently using Tamron 17-55 and loving it.

it produces very contrasty and sharp images if you have a good copy :)

next fav is TOkina 12-24mm....never failed me once :) very sharp too.

My Tamron 17-50mm serve me well too; it produces very sharp images.
I have tried using my friends Nikon 17-55mm and notices that IQ are quite close.

I prefer Tamron over Nikon because it weighs much lighter where I can shoot at lower shutter speed without camera shake. At least 1 f-stop for me. ;) Definitely worthwhile in my opinion.

I also do not have problem like lens reporting wrong distance to the camera which causes underexposure issue, maybe I'm lucky.

Of course, if you are looking for built quality, Tamron is never close to Nikon. :embrass:

I like Tokina 12-24mm too, but didn't own one yet. Still trying to compare with Sigma 10-20mm because it can go wider.

All tamron lens report wrong distance.

It is when the flash photography in TTL BL mode and at close distance then you will see problems. Normal TTL you will not notice anything.

my chinese also CMI!

I see the score only! hahaa.

but seriously, the tamron is screw driven auto focus right?

only the tokina and sigma can be used if you are a d40 or d40x user?

Never heard of a Tokina that is HSM/SWM.

But all these three lenses are screw driven.

ok so among the 4 f2.8 lenses, only the nikon(SWM) and Sigma (HSM) can be used on the D40.
am I right to say that?

or am I wrong yet again?

I tried both TTL BL & TTL also dun have this problem. Dunno why you claim all Tamron lens report wrong distance:dunno: Those info are not claim by the manufacturer thru.

BTW, I dun work for Tamron just wanna share my experience :bsmilie:

obviously, manufacturer will not claim bad things about their own products right? :nono:

Anyway go google TTL BL+Tamorn 17-50mm+overexposure I think you will find some interesting things. Thom Hogan in his Tamron 17-50mm review also noted this problem (bottom of page).

Cheers

N.B. I started a thread somewhere before, with lots of links, but I'm too lazy to find it anymore.

Dun flame me....

Canon 17-55 is cheaper. IS somemore. You can look at Tokina's too.

don think its all... my tamron 28-75 have been giving me pretty consistant result with a sb600 under ttl-bl even at the closest focusing and infinite focusing...

so by saying "ALL" is way too generalising.

The Tamron is pretty good in terms of sharpness and picture quality. Well reviewed and is great value for money for a fast lens. I have got one which I am considering to sell. Hate to let it go but it has been totally underused because I use the Nikon 50mm f1.8prime and the 18-200mm VR most of the time. Want to put the money to better use.

Hi guys,
I am sourcing for a cheaper alternative to the nikkor lense.
So far I think only Sigma http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all.asp
or
Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) has compatible.
Anyone been using any of these brands? How is ur verdict?

I'm sure there's a Canon 17-55 with a Nikon F-mount...:nono:

i have this problem as well... washed out subjects when on TTL-BL, switch it to TTL, and it works good.... sigh... have you tried and snap a shot on TTL-BL and at 50mm?
