Hmm, where are the threats or blackmailing?

Just a friendly reminder...

Handle the approach with care or you might be taken for as threatening or blackmailing...;)

Is the name of the shop "Focus Point" ? I too had bad experience while asking price of D200 and VR lenses

Apart from Alan Photo, I trust no other SLS camera shop.
Most people I know have good experience at Alan Photo.

Even then, I trust Cathay, MS, TK and John 3:16 more than Alan.

where is TK foto located ?
Beach Road, Shaw Towers, 2nd Level, can't miss the big yellow Nikon signboard. :)

My sympathy. I'm not sure whether it's the same shop that my friend and I went but it sounds the same. Does it have an E in the name shop? just curious.

i'm posting this thread to warn other fellow photographers about a shop at Sim Lim Sq.

I had an experienced very recently with a corner shop at the 1st storey of Sim Lim Sq(near the bubble lifts)< Quite obvious it is a Camera shop

I bought a wireless remote from them and only to found out 3 days later that i'm over priced by 4times.

I went down with the recommended price printed from the camera's official website. What the guy can do is just say that they import from Japan. I asked for prove and he decline. Just say that they import and selling at that price, they are losing money.

Going down to CASE and blacklist them...

Lesson learnt. Check price before going out to buy.

Haha...

since we have a thread dedicated to "cheapest lens, cheapest accessories"...
why not we have another thread just on "more expensive lens ever bought, most expensive accessories every bouught.."

that will be interesting...haha

Anyway, believe in karma...
One day, that salesman will get cheated or shortchanged by others too...
Based on your silly karma belief, are you saying that hASHbrown_kopitiam must have previously been involved in cheating or shortchanging another person or persons, or animal or animals ....

I felt in this kind of case, can't blame anybody except yourself for not doing your homework or finding out abt the price properly...

Just like somebody lost his wallet after watching a movie at the cinema, or a person lost his wallet in a taxi or on a bus, there is no one to balme but himself... though the person surely want to complaint against the cinema, taxi company or bus company...

HONEST??????? CAT*** P*O*O ?!!!!

Do me a favour :nono:
They ripped me off for 60 SGD on a 200SGD purchase and I've since deprived them of 3k of my own business and the same from friends/family. Which reminds me, I must let the sales lady, branch manager and the manager's boss know that...when the shop is busy...with lots of tourists.

Why should we have to "build up a relationship", do endless pricing research (which I do enjoy for the larger purchases actually!), go through the pain of bartering (which I know many Singaporeans also despise) and so on, just to get a fair and transparent price. This is Singapore for goodness sake - why should consumers be restricted to Harvey Norman and Best Denki (I'm using "fair" in the loosest possible terms in those cases given the scale of their overheads :D )?

IMHO, everyone, including wealthy tourists and Singaporeans who don't have the time to spend hours researching prices and haggling, are entitled to the same quality of deal as everyone else. "It's their own fault", "get over it", the whole sales folks/ricebowl argument and similar just doesn't cut it with me. Business ethics DOES cut it with me.

Very well said. Expressed my sentiments exactly.

U got to be careful even with Cathay. Salespeople may be ok to deal with but be wary about their prices. Let's just say their prices can change within minutes!!!

When I bought my camera in Canada, I was on a training programme then. Obviously a tourist, non-ang moh. But the prices are all very open. And they are frank with their honest recommendations.

And they dun think Hmm, here's a bugger not from our land let's make some extra bucks from him. And mind u, competition there is stiffer if anything than here. They've got a lot of online stores and stores across a couple of blocks.

Based on what I've heard from people here that I come into contact with, some will tell me "Oh for me, no prob. The boss in the so-and-so shop knows me. So he gives me good prices. Oh he lets me try this and that lens, etc..." To me it's just plain nonsensical. If u are a regular customer of a shop then, good for u of cos but the shop has no right to cheat on tourists or unsuspecting/newbie customers or give them a poorer service than the regulars. That's the disdainful business ethics than many shops practice here.

And I also dun understand why many lens prices in shops over here are so over-priced compared to some other countries. Taxes?

The difference is that the other party facilitated the mistake or made use of ignorance to do so.

If I were to add on your analogy, would you reconsider your position if hypothetically this occurs:

"Before boarding a bus, you are asked to put your wallet in safe deposit with the driver. You can only retrieve it when you reach your destination. No reminders are sent to you to retrieve it before you alight the bus and if you forget to take it,the wallet is forfeited. Worse, the bus doors open only for 3 seconds per passenger so you have to alight in a hurry or miss a stop."

Yes you may have forgotten, but isn't the bus company at fault in the first place for putting in place a ridiculous system to facilitate your forgetting? Can I say that it is solely the passengers' fault for forgetting to collect?

Again, put the analogy to the current situation, isn't a shop doing something wrong by setting an extremely overpriced margin, to try to "con" unsuspecting customers who may not know the market price?

Yes I know my modification of your analogy may be a bit extreme, but I was trying to work with your analogy to facilitate the illustration of the point that the fault cannot be solely the customer's failure to "research".

I beg to differ.
Do check out prices at a few places b4 committing anything.

Song bro is getting competitive, but depend on the sales person. Some of their items are priced ridiculously while some are cheaper than the above mention shops.

Photocam at peninsula is ok, look for andrew. Got my tripod at $170 from him where CP and AP quoted me $255++

I beg to differ. I had a very nasty experience with Photocam at Peninsular. They are the only ones who were opened on Sunday and I went in to buy a Giottos 0.5 wide angle extension. I was charged $300 and a day later, I found out from CP that they sell it for $70plus.I was quoted 4X the price. I went back and they refused to give me a refund, saying that they cannot sell at $70 because they are a small shop. But at 4x the price!!! Makes me wonder if everything else is also inflated.

Anyhow, we settled on me topping up another $20 for a 30L Digi-Cabi. In the end I paid:$300+$20=$320 for (extension and Digi-Cabi), when I could have paid $70+$90=$160 for the same stuff. I was fleeced, went home to find that the hygrometer of the digi-cabi does not work and the humidifier condenses over. I have lost confidence in that shop and now I swear by MS colour,TCW and CP. I don't mind helping out small shops but I hate it when the shop uses that as a front for dishonest practices.

The price of being a newbie and not doing my research on CS.
