Great stuff lennyl,
I wish I checked Wikipedia earlier. It's pretty simple stuff.
With red light of around 700nm at f22 the smallest point that can be resolved is 0.0188mm diameter.
The 50D sensor has 4752 pixels across 22.2mm giving a pixel width of 0.0047mm
Unless I've made a silly mistake with my arithmetic that means the smallest point that can be resolved for red light at f22 is about 4 times as wide as a pixel. Obviously it is smaller for blue light at f8. But this supports the point that I was making. Perhaps the 50D sensor technology has approached the limit of pixel size.
Now I need to go and check my maths and see what it's like for other f values & colours.
