Another leak: 5D replacement spec...

Great stuff lennyl,

I wish I checked Wikipedia earlier. It's pretty simple stuff.

With red light of around 700nm at f22 the smallest point that can be resolved is 0.0188mm diameter.

The 50D sensor has 4752 pixels across 22.2mm giving a pixel width of 0.0047mm

Unless I've made a silly mistake with my arithmetic that means the smallest point that can be resolved for red light at f22 is about 4 times as wide as a pixel. Obviously it is smaller for blue light at f8. But this supports the point that I was making. Perhaps the 50D sensor technology has approached the limit of pixel size.

Now I need to go and check my maths and see what it's like for other f values & colours.

Pete

Now you guys just reminded me why I hated Science back in my college days. :sweatsm:

:Later,

What I want to know, because I intend to buy a MkII, is at what point do diffraction effects limit the resolution of the lens so that lots of pixels become irrelevant.

OK, I see where you're coming from.

Your calculations are correct... from a theoretical point of view.

HOWEVER, there are other complications in the photography world: (i) strength of AA filter (ii) print size. Since I am not really into printing, I know little (and honestly, don't care about it... ;) ) about it. But the strength of AA filter is an important factor. When images start to appear soft due to a lack of contrast, it is because of the AA filter combined with lens imperfections and diffraction. At that point, if we drop the AA filter, there will be higher pixel-to-pixel contrast, and we are free to go to a higher pixel density to avoid aliasing.

Honestly, from an IMAGE stand point, there is nothing to lose by going to a higher pixel count... as long as the engineering is properly done. And we can trust Canon to take care of that (so far, high ISO noise has never deteriorated from 10D to 20D to 30D to 40D at the IMAGE level). :bsmilie: People often argue about the drawbacks of higher pixel density only because they want to stare at 100% pixel view. And that is really not what photographers should be doing. Experienced landscape photographers will tell you the effects of diffraction are often over-exaggerated. If one needs to shoot at f/22 just to get the foreground and background in focus, then one should just proceed without fear of diffraction. :bsmilie:

Just to get back to topic.

Seems that we'll be seeing an update on the 35 f/1.4L: check here. Mark II.... perhaps Canon wants to address the edge softness of this lens at wide open apertures and improve on the weather sealing?

Shucks.. I was hoping for an updated 24L instead. 35L is already pretty sharp from center to edge.. 24L is the one that needs to improve it's edge sharpness more.

It is a very serious point.

If you go back to my original posting I was saying that if the 5D MkII has the same sensor technology as the 50D then it could have just under 40Mp. What I want to know, because I intend to buy a MkII, is at what point do diffraction effects limit the resolution of the lens so that lots of pixels become irrelevant.

Incidentally I did not suggest that Sean McHugh was an expert because he owned a 5D, it was an incidental point, which I thought might be of interest as we were were discussing the 5D. When I see a guy strutting around with a 5D or any other bit of fancy equipment hanging round his neck I do not think him an expert in optics, an expert photographer, or socially sophisticated, I simply think "that guy strutting around with that expensive bit of kit has chosen to spend his money on an expensive bit of kit".

Just use the cambridge in color website. Why bother to reinvent the wheel?

I'm hoping for a 24-105 f4L Mark II with the 5D Mark II.

Second that..... I'm hoping for an Update on the 100mm Macro f2.8 too. Just hope they add an IS like Nikon 105mm Macro with VR.

Hey, if they have that (100mm macro IS) will you buy my macro 2nd hand (as per your signature line)? :bsmilie:

Since I recently bought the 100-400L, I'd say that is a good candidate for replacement :bsmilie:

That would very much depend on - 'which came first'..... the money for the 2nd hand lens.... or the IS version  :sweatsm:

My guts instinct tells me a 24-70 F2.8L IS is coming on the way, bundling with 5D mk2

I hope the 3 products aint last minutes changes and splitting of the original 5D Mark II since the Nikon D700 was announced

As mentioned by other clubsnapper from another thread, I do think this seems like photoshopped. Observe the texture of around the '7', there are tell tale sign of 'cloning tool'.

Fake or what, we are sure there will be a replacement for 5D base on the official teaser so far, and 7D is a likely name if they take the 2 model approach. The wait is near the end. Now where is the 1DsIII replacement coming ???..... :D

Maybe end of this year......

Nikon is already selling D90 in other countries (such as the states).
Canon better not lag behind.

Have you guys seen this link?

Do you consider the rumored price of ~ S$3.5k to 4k as reasonable? The Nikon D700 is selling for ~S$4k.
