Am a new new newbies can Pls highlight me

Noted! So sorry!
Hi. I tried to took a picture this morning, the picture turned out to be very reddish.
My setting is PRE, F11,30sec, 100iso.
Is it my shutter speed is too short? I must extend to 60sec..90sec? So the picture will become brownish?

Sino238,

You started 2 threads, both asking the same thing about D60.
I have merged them.

Please refrain from doing same in future.

A converted D60 is very nice for IR. I like it more than my converted D80 which produces a lot of noise compared to the D60. I've been using the converted D60 for 2 years until I replaced it with the D80. If conversion is not out of the question, try to contact the CE of this forum...;)

For those Nikon dSLR which are more IR friendly (IR Block filter which is not that strong), setting of the WB is based on the following steps.

1. Set to Aperture Mode, ISO200, f8
2. Screw on the IR filter
3. Turn WB to "PRE"
4. Press on until the "PRE" start to blink
5. Cover the viewfinder and look for a patch of green grass under the sun and shoot to set the WB
6. Check the WB if there is a "GOOD". If yes, WB is set.
7. If the WB shows a "No Gd", repeat step 3 to 5 until you get a "GOOD"

A successful picture before post-processing should be something like this

DSC_4517_1.jpg

For those Nikon dSLR which are less IR friendly, setting the WB will be a problem.

Here are a few procedure you can consider.

Shooting in RAW
1. Screw on the IR filter
2. Set WB to Auto
3. Try Manual Exposure of ISO200 to ISO400, f3.5 to f8, 8secs to 20secs
4. The picture should appear as Red.
5. Check for blowout details and adjust exposure accordingly.
6. Post-process the file in computer and tweak the WB from there.

Try setting the WB using Manual exposure (success not guarantee)

1. Set to Manual Mode, Auto WB
2. Screw on the IR filter
3. Try to get a good exposure using ISO200 to ISO400, f3.5 to f8, 8secs to 20secs
4. Once you get an OK exposure, time to set the WB
5. Turn WB to "PRE"
6. Press on until the "PRE" start to blink
5. Using the same setting for the exposure, look for a patch of green grass under the sun and shoot to set the WB
6. Check the WB if there is a "GOOD". If yes, WB is set.
7. If the WB shows a "No Gd", repeat step 3 to 5 until you get a "GOOD"

I have tried these steps and the last time I did it successfully was for a Nikon D80 with much difficulties...

So I suggest you try shooting in RAW. The picture should appear as RED.

Hope that answer your question.

no. its juz like taking a normal pic. ur shutter speed will only determine how "bright" ur pic is. The reddish color is due to ur white balance.

for ur wb,
u try taking a picture first with R72 on. find out the shutter speed & aperture which will give u a well expose picture.

using the similar setting, aim at the grass and do a custom wb. u shd b able to get a "good" indication for ur CWB.

why not u join tml IR outing at lower pierce, i think its faster n easier to learn that way.

I am happy with my modded D60 for IR photography

Help! How to clean the hoya R72. I got finger print on it! my Len paper don help. How how how

IR filter smudges easily.

The best way to clean is to use a good piece of cleaning cloth or can use lenspen and clean it.
Polish in a circular manner.
