Hihi. Am newbies to IR poto. Am going to take my very first IR photo. I studied thru those link, know tat I got to set a correct white balance first. Now I got a question. How will I know did I set a rite white balance? Can I say tat If I set at the rite white balance, my picture will turn out to be reddish with my R72 filter on?

What camera are you currently using?
Depending on the Hot mirror in front of the sensor, it might block out so much IR light that setting WB might be a problem.
So it might be more advisable to shoot in RAW if required.

Am using nikon d60. Lens 18-55mm. Can my camera use for IR? I know my camera don fall into the list of the compatible camera link here. But I searched around. Other said mine can. Am blur liao

Got it from internet...

A search on flickr for Nikon D60 IR brings up a few results so it looks possible. Typically every new model gets an improved IR blocker. The D40X requires longer exposures than the D40 but the D60 exposure times look similar to mine with the D40X. Go for it!

The newer version of the Nikon series dSLR can block out a lot of IR light.
D90 is almost impossible but still can shoot in RAW.
Trial and error with your D60 but no guarantee that it will succeed.
The last in line was Nikon D80 where the success rate was like 50/50.

Hi,

since (IMO) no one is using D60 for IR, so no one is able to advise you on your question.

If you have the D60 and an infrared filter R72, then test it yourself. Only by trial and error then you'll know whether it can or cannot.

Then after you shoot, do post your samples here. Maybe some of us can help check it.

Ok, I’ve got a Nikon D60 w/ a Hoya R72 IR filter. I’m pretty confident with the post processing side, but from all the tutorials I’ve read, there was very little in regards to the actual settings and conditions for taking the picture. So, my two questions are:

a) How do I properly set white balance? I read that it should be done with the filter on, but when I try to set it (using the ‘measure’ function & a white card) it says that it’s unable to be set. Presumably because it is too dark.

b) Exposure time. The meter is obviously not working correctly with the filter on, so how do you determine your exposure time?

Anyone who could simply tell me their step-by-step for taking an IR picture would be much appreciated.

Check histogram after each shot. You'll soon know how many stops "off" ur meter is ...

I'm currently using D700 which is not sensitive to IR and can't custom WB.

So I just set my WB to 2500k and shoot in RAW, exposure time are normally 30sec at f/11, ISO200 under bright daylight. All the photos will turn up reddish which I will correct it during post processing.

ps, i'm using R72 filter.

Everything will be red.

When correcting WB during PP, use grey point and select the green foilage.

Setting WB to 2500K will give magenta instead of red, both are ok since it is RAW file.

Using D700 f/8, 120sec, ISO400. Straight from camera setting WB at 2500k

After PP by correcting WB and channel swap.
