Sony FX1E user here. I mainly use to capture school events and weddings. but recently a small spot of fungus got onto my lens cos i've got no dry cabi to store my cam.

so now i've got 2 options, send it in for servicing(which they told be to replace the whole lens) or sell it off and save abit more to get another cam within the same range or slightly higher.

starving student here ;)

ok. thanks for telling us.

to GUYS OUT THERE...BEWARE OF A MOLDY FX1E

wah. dont like that la. im not even selling it yet. im just considering the fact if i should upgrade or not or to send it for servicing then selling.

Check out other 3rd party camera shop for cleaning the fungus. Should be a lot cheaper. Don't go sony, their price is killing;)

yea, sony's prices are killer! any 3rd party shops you recommend?

go to wisma sony center and get a quotation first. FX1E is consider consumer product and not professional grade so the service charge is quite ok. No harm and find out the quote, you will be surprise sometime

i called sony up last time, they told me they couldnt give me a quotation because they need to assess the problem. @ethanshao, will check him out thanks! :)

you have to leave your FX1 there, someone will assess and call you back to inform you the repair cost. It is up to you whether you wanna go ahead with the repair. They will not repair unless green light given by you

I know of professionals shooting with Panasonic GH-1! Hey! That's way cheaper but it produces 1080HD Videos.

If you cancel the repair from sony, they will still charge a check up fee for over $10.

precisely. i've sent my cam for tape deck replacement last year and i asked the technician if he could do anything about the fungus. he told me total lens replacement. :dunno:

Your original post says "but recently a small spot of fungus got onto my lens", now you say it was already there last year, and was significant enough to mean a lens replacement? How SMALL is the spot?

smaller then the size of a coin. like way smaller. i enquired with sony, they told me they dont do lens cleaning. hence the lens replacement.

3 spots on my FX1E len, and Sony quoted $1800 to replace the whole len, plus GST is come to near 2K, why change it? keep it as backup set lah!

no way! seriously?! i dont have that much cash! student only eh and i need the cam for work
