Thanks for the great advice guys. I have been reading everything I can on it so far. I do need to get a jumpstart on that manual though. I hope to be posting some of my photos soon! If anyone else has any suggestions, tips, etc. please let me know!

my guess to this issue is a faulty set. check if there's a newer firmware, that might do the trick. else, send it in for a service. this looks like some pre-production symptoms to me.

Was your sharpening mode on high? Over sharpening may be the cause.
Just a guess. Try it out.

sorry if i missout any info provide by the TS...i understand NR will only take effect from shutter set at > 4s...mean 5s onward than the NR will work..if is at 1.6-4s u will still see hot pixel even the NR is "ON"..that hapn to my E500...

Tried Pixel Mapping the camera yet? I mean, repeating this for a couple of times. And like the other members mentioned, the hot pixel issue has been around for a while, looks like this is a technology problem for digital cameras.

Tried too, not a pixel lesser. Certainly hope that a repair at svc ctr will solve the problem. Will keep everyone posted.

I stumbled upon a depreview forum who posted a night sky photo (asking what are the dots) and hot pixel was fairly bad too.

Just to add some suggestion. For those who are plague by hot pixel in night shots, you can turn NR off and manual a 20sec lencap shot. Find any hotpixel remover which supports blackframe mapping comparison against lens cap shot and will be able to remove almost all the hotpixel. Some tools can remove the blue/red dots too.

This is bad. Bring this down to the service centre, and post a new thread on the progress, if you can. Just to share the experience with the community here. Cheers.

Here is a piece of good news for those owning and thinking to own.

I sent to Olympus service centre and the young lady was nice to do a compare test with another demo set E510. The result on the demo set came out OK for 6sec, while 8 sec came very clean too (includes dim red pixels).

So the conclusion was my new set has some problem. :)

Cool... as long as they can verify this issue then they can solve it/change it/rectify it... that is good news indeed. Hope they sort out your problem without creating more problems. Cheers.

I am totally convinced that this is going to be their best seller. Read somewhere that this model just got awarded recently for their new technology. Amazingly sharp shot on the cat. I have also seen great shots from flickr Olympus E-510 Group. Lovely rich colours. I particularly like the fast flash of 1/400. Will be getting mine in a week's time. Good to know they have break the barrier this time against Canon and Nikon. Cheers and thanks for sharing this info. I am sold.

Has anyone use this (E-510) with a dedicated macro lens of 100mm and up? For example, sigma 105 F2.8 macro? I read on the internet that this particular lens is available in 4/3rds mount. Anyone got hands-on with this combo?

Hands-on as a macro lens to take close-ups or as a normal portrait lens ?

For macros. If used with E510, does it mean 2:1 magnification is achieveable? Since the lens is a 1:1 lens and the camera is 2X factored, would it appear in a sense to be 2:1 even though it's just a crop? What's your comfortable handholding speed on a macro subject such as 20 cent coin at 1:1? Hope it's not too much to ask of you, thanks :)

The answer is simle, no. You cannot do that. Does the manual really say you can do it? I have the FL-50 but I cannot remember having seen that in the manual. The only dSLR you can do that with is the E-3xx series, AFAIK.

BTW, ask admin to move the tread to 4/3 section. That is where dSLRs are discussed.

A 1:1 lens is a 1:1. Period. That means 1mm in real life is equal to 1mm on your sensor, regardless of size. Oly is confusing with this crop factor and 35mm equivalent stuff. A 100mm lens is a 100mm lens also, not more nor less.

Sorry about my ranting about this.

The above image is a ~3.8:1 image taken with my E-500 having a sensor size of 17.3x13mm. A 35mm film has an image area of 36x24mm, ~2x the 4/3 sensor. Taken the same image with an OM 1:1 macro lens would give the same magnification but the number of visible millimeters on the actual film area would be about twice, i.e. 9 and something.

My example of testing the IS on the E-510...

Does the manual really say you can do it?

Well, OlyFlyer, yes and no. See the bottom of page 25 in the FL-50 manual. It says you can do it, giving a drawing of how the lighting from the two flashes will illuminate the subject. (I used my E20 and FL40 on a flash bracket in this manner.) Then the manual goes on to say that the built-in flash on some models may be disabled with the FL-50 in the hot shoe. I kinda thought that might refer to some brand x camera, but not a camera that's part of a system.

I had hope that someone would tell me about a new Olympus cable that would provide the solution.

Oh well, I can always hope.

The only models I know of is the E-3xx which they probably refer to. The E-510 did not exist when the FL-50 was designed so the flash's manual is not written for that camera.
