Alaska in Winter!

Thanks for the free tour, I save quite a lot of money after seeing your photo.
Dunno what about other think but I think this a great series!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Seeing is one thing... experiencing what it's like being there is totally different! I don't feel that my photos are able to bring out the feelings of being there... and I do recommend everyone who is interested to go there for a visit!

When I was there, I felt really free, the people are really welcoming in Fairbanks, and the hostel owner even gave me a free tour on her car around parts of Fairbanks (Not in Anchorage though... so many rude people around)

And although I've always heard of people in Alaska suffering from SAD (A kind of depression they suffer due to the lack on sunlight in the winter), I don't think it's the case for the small cities.

interesting set!
im flying off in 8hours towards northeastern china, so im expecting similarly cold weather, though not as cold as -30.... =P
could you share what gear you brought with you? im worried that i'd miss out stuff.... =P thanks in advance!

Hmm, long johns are a must, a long sleeve turtle neck shirt, a layer of fleece, and a winter jacket. For pants, after 2 days, I just switched to wearing a pair of jeans alone, cause I've eczema, and wearing long johns aggravate it. Bring a pair of ski pants if u can, your legs won't be as cold as mine :bsmilie:

Bring boots, and importantly, wear wool socks! Not cotton, cause once they get wet, your feet is gonna freeze! :sticktong

Thanks for the virtual tour.

#1: my favourite. Loves the colour and the composition
#5: nice composition
#17: is this taken during the day or the exposure was compensated by the camera? As I understand it the Northern Lights are usually not bright enough to be seen in daytime
#26: Interesting fact but how does plug the car to the power point heat up the car? :dunno: Initially when I first saw the photo thought they were going green - using electric car :bsmilie:

PS: Thread like this should be banned, makes me go green with envy and bad for my pockets :bsmilie:.
PPS: Unfortunately, had always been a bit masochistic, subscribed

#17 was a long exposure... I had the intention of taking star trails, but because I couldn't see the lights with my eyes and it was awfully cold out there, I just took a few random shots and kind of gave up trying to take photos. And what do I know, when I reviewed my photos the next morning, I noticed this green aurora in the sky! I did thought I see a very slight green tint in the skies that night, but wasn't sure.

#26 The plug powers the electric heaters, which warms the battery, engine block, and oil pan.

r u based in the states?

can't imagine doing star trail in alaska? it must have been extreme and prolonged freeze

Yes, but am going to be stuck in SG for 3 years in a few days time... :sticktong

It isn't all that cold to freeze anything at all... my batteries even ran fine, as long as I kept it in the bag away from the cold before I slot the batteries in.

And it doesn't snow in Fairbanks that much... when I was there, even if it does snow, it was really really mild.

Alaska had such a good impression on me, I really feel that I have to go back there again...

47. My favourite bird! This guy's peculiar; he was taken care of from young by trainers, which imprinted the trainers as their own species/parents. This little puffin follows the trainer all around, and does mating calls to them (and not to other puffins).

48. I've no idea what's the name of this bird... can someone help me I.D.?

Nope, I've been in SG all along, just that I was given the chance to work in the US for the past 1.5 years... I've to go back for a 2 yrs bond + part time studies, before I can leave SG again.

EH! i was just curious because i've always wanted to go alaska once in my life but i'm still alittle young to dream about it, how much did this trip cost you? your photos are really nice!!

I won a photo competition and was awarded travel vouchers, which I used to go to Alaska! It costs about USD 600 both ways to fly from Los Angeles to Anchorage, and another USD300 to fly from Anchorage to Fairbanks both ways. You could fly from Los Angeles to Fairbanks for USD 900, but then, you'll have to pay more to go to Anchorage.

Those are December prices (with advance booking), I'm not too sure of prices in other seasons.

Going to the wildlife conservation centre was not the best idea in the winter... half of the animals were already in hibernation, so I didn't get to see much at all.

Thanks for the lovely photos!
i had just went to Alaska in the summer (much more bearable conditions) for my honeymoon, didn't get to see it in winter so great that you're sharing your photos on how it would be.

would love to go back again but... so many other places to go!:)

very nice pictures you have there. it makes me feel that i was given a free tour to alaska, someplace that i would really want to visit!

hi great captures! just one question. how do you know where to find all these scenic spots? did you have a guide specifically for it? or did you go research and read up yourself?

My photos are just touching the tip of an iceberg :bsmilie:

Some of them are along the way, some are reached by pointing to random locations on the GPS and driving there... most importantly, you need to be brave enough to take risks for good angles!

The problem with Alaska is that if you're in/near city areas, most scenic spots are rather far from places where you can stop (or you might get blocked by trees too), so just explore!

You certainly don't need a guide here... and I don't think you'll want to trust their judgement as to what is photogenic versus yours anyway :)

ok.. If only my sch have overseas internships to alaska I want to go. Hahaha.

If you're in Japan, you might have a chance... haha. Since lots of Japs are into the aurora and all. Or if you're in hotel management/tourism, you might have a chance too.

reporting in from my winter wonderland... lol..
indeed, the blast of subzero air is a refreshing experience that'll warrant the use of a list of expletives you've learnt to date...
proper winter wear is a must if you do not wish to freeze your family jewels. i've to open 4 gates just to use the toilet....
but the experience is fairly worth it. i'll provide more updates with time~ =D
cheers~! thanks for the prior tips offered by TS
