Alaska in Winter!

Wish I could be there. Seems like a really cool place from your pictures Thanks for sharing :)

amazing photographs you got that bro!!

got any tips for those who might be making a trip there as well??
just wondering what's the budget range.. (so that can start saving up :D )

Hmm, I was flying form Cali at that time, so I can't comment on the airfare... but it was more worthwhile to fly to Anchorage, then Anchorage to Fairbanks.

Fuel is slightly more expensive there than in California, costing about USD3.10+++ per gallon. Food's priced like anywhere else in the US.. the cheapest is to cook your own food ;) Car rental is about $40-$80 per day for a small car. You won't need a 4wd, unless it's snowing heavily... but then again, if it snows heavily, you probably won't wanna be out

I stayed in a hostel, and in winter, it costs about USD15 per night. In spring and autumn, double that. In summer, triple or quadable that.

If you've money to spare, go for a flightseeing tour! I regretted not going for one the other time I was there, cause I didn't want to pay for both seats (minimum 2-4 people, depending on which flight company you're going with). I personally recommend the helicopter instead of the plane tours... although they are more expensive, they'll provide you with a closer look of glaciers (even landings) and Alaska.

When you get to Fairbanks, drive 2 hours out of the city to get to Chena Hot Springs.... if you came at the right time, you'll see lots of Japanese there... ;)

I'm so jealous!! Would love to go Alaska someday too.
It's a self drive trip right?
Do you have prior driving experience in winter conditions before?
Is it necessary?

Thanks for sharing!!

Yup, it's a self drive trip :)
I didn't have winter driving experience prior to that, but I've been on a car in winter conditions, so I know what to take note of... (drive slow, know what to do when the car skids etc..) Most cars are already winterized, so you can somewhat put your mind at ease. :)

Erm, I'm not really worried abt the car... its the driver (ie. me) that I'm worried abt.. hehe,
cos I not experienced driver (have license but don't own car, so don't drive in SG)
Drove once in Australia, went onto gravel road, skidded and almost had accident... so winter conditions probably worse... :(

Need to get driver kakis...... ;p

Anyway, thanks for your info!

nuts, I've got that problem of yours solved. Count on me to drive. Have driven a 4WD in the Outback. Never driven in snow, but can acclimatize. Just tell me when to go. ha ha ha.

Me me me! LOL.

Driven in hot, wet, snow, icy wet (we call slush) conditions... Part and parcel of living in California and China.

Lol. I would want to go back to Alaska again, but not this year... :)
Driving in the snow isn't that bad, at least there isn't a danger of driving on ice. When snow start melting, that's when driving gets dangerous..

Cool! haha!
Though I read somewhere (or was it lypklypk himself?) that this year not good for aurora?
So gotta wait 2011 or 2012??

Yup, wait another 2 years, when the sunspot activity is suppose to be at the peak. :)

I WANT TO GO TO ALASKA SO BADLY! Was the ice and snow tolerable? I bet you didn't even notice it after awhile.

Is the northern light beautiful?

I've only managed to catch a really really mild glimpse ( can't confirm until I took a long exposure photo), so I can't answer that question :bsmilie:
