What does a "Scalloped" hood mean? Do you mean petal shape?

If so, you may need to realise why some hoods are petal shaped and others are round shaped.

Haha, just a meaningless comment. Prime lenses don't need the petal hood.

Exactly, prime lens hoods are round, so I'm not sure why there are objections against the hood.

i think Randius is not objecting about the hood but just giving his opinion about it since this thread also for giving opinions... ;)

FWIW, KRW raved about the new AFS 50mm, even claim that it will beat the ZF50.

Anyone good at reading a lens' MTF chart? KRW provided official MTF charts which seem to suggest that the new 8-element design will significantly outperform the older one.

Rgds.

Yeap I was trying to figure out what he found bad about the hood.

Yeap I was trying to figure out what he found bad about the hood.

There is nothing wrong with the hood and I know why it is designed to be so (in fact, for all prime lenses). Just saying that it looks ugly and no other meanings.

Yes I understand, I was trying to understand why you said it looks ugly. You then made reference to a "scalloped" hood and said that a "scalloped" hood will be better. When I tried to ask whether you meant "petal shaped hood" when you say "scalloped", you then said you were making a meaningless comment? Gone one circile and I still dont understand why you said it looks ugly. Now, maybe you want to clarify?

I think Randius comment of "Ugly" is purely based on aesthetics and which is purely his perspective. Of course one man's meat is another man's poison, what may be ugly to him maybe be pleasing to someone else.

So perhaps, his comment meant that the hood to him was designed in such a way that it did not match up to the aesthetic expectations he had set?

Yup agreed, so I guess the question is, how would he have liked it instead?

the man doesnt like it, he just doesnt like it. Leave it be and move on.

Well if he doesn't like it so much, he can just dump it. After all the 1.8s and 1.4s today don't come with a hood (I could be wrong, but I had to buy an "optional" one for the 1.4 AFD).

Gosh, it is just a harmless comment on the aesthetics of the hood...

Though I don't like the look of the hood but if needs be, I will still put it on to prevent flare and such. I even bought the dedicated hood for 50/1.4D but it is made of metal, feels more shiok in hand ;p Too bad it can't be used on the new lens because of difference in filter thread size and I had to sell it away...

Oh God! Can we please just let go of the HOOD :what:
Lets continue with the lens and its picture quality from the samples available

Hi,

Anybody knows when can I get the new AFS 50/1.4 here? ETA? Gonna be getting one. Thanks.

Nikon had indicated it to be released during December. However, there is a rumor of it being available at end of November.

Ah, I did too, I guess what you were after is the metal feel rather than the plastic feel. Too bad that only the old lenses had metal hoods.

What's the filter size on the new version? Can't just port over huh?

The new lens has filter thread of 58mm, same as Canon's 50/1.4. My HS-9 hood is 52mm thread size...

BTW, why does the new lens use a deep-recessed front element design like the 50/2 AI?

if any of you are interested to see how the deep-recessed front element looks like from the top of the lens and how the lens looks side ways on a D700, then click on the link below and then scroll till you are somewhere near the bottom and look for a post by knips_r

here is the LINK to the shots...

"The front element is recessed into the barrel quite a bit. And the front element is smaller than on the current 50/1.4."

Can see it is really quite deeply-recessed. The size still looks small enough, even with the hood attached.

Just about a month more to go till its release :D

have to see how the bokeh is
