AFS 24-120mm F4 VR

IMHO sir, the 24-70 is the closest one can get to instant focusing, in today's context. If there is ever a faster focusing lens, I do not know.

Another thing, it is not just fast, it is damn accurate too.

I find the 70-200 vr2, silghtly faster and more accurate too..once you set the limiter of course.

Hi bro, I'm an ex-Oly user and imho, Oly's SWD focuses faster Nikon's SWM. Ok dun ask me why I'm using nikon now, Im just comparing AF :p

TS sorry for the OT :)

I love my 24-120mm f/4... coming from a former 24-70mm f/2.8 user. The extra 50mm at the tele end works better for me as i travel with the 24-120mm... Overall great sharp lens that gives images that 'pop' in good light with a very useful range. This is the one lens that i will feel comfortable bringing on trips.

Another solution is to get 2 primes, a 24mm or 28mm and a 85mm/105mm.. depends on your shooting style. :)

Hi CS members

I read with interest the comments on 24-120 VR as well as other lenses which were mentioned for comparison. Wonder how would this compare with the 28-300 VR, since they are all FX lenses.

I can only speak for my personal experience with this lens

I have used this on my D90 before (preparing to take the FF path that time)

I am very satisfied with it!

Given an opportunity and need, I would get this lens again =)

One photographer did a comparison between this 2 lenses as in my previous post :

Comparison of different Nikon lenses to the 24-120 F4 VR :

Nikon 24-120mm VR Review

Just FYI.................................:)

He favored the 24-120mm. But I think you got to try them yourself as it's subjective as Kenrockwell preferred the 28-300.

Regards.

I have the 28-300mm. Good as a all purpose lens for its price and it comes with VR. Only gripe is that the widest is 28 mm but serves well for most occasion. Else, carry a 16-35mm to complement this lens.

That 28-300 VR would be the option.
If you be normal used on DX 18-200 VR and getting the 24-120 VR has a bit loosing the Tele End.
But I believed in Nikon Lenses and never let us disappointed at all.
Unless Is something bad issue :)

I have used the 28-300mm. Don't ask too much of it as it is a general purpose all-in-one lens.

I am all in favor of the 24-70mm. The weight never bothered me, and the quality is really several notches above the other zooms.

Hi Jeremy1

Many thanks for the links to the comparison of 28-300 with 24-120 as well as Ken Rockwell's comments. Very informative and comprehensive indeed!

I would probably go for the 28-300. It is ironical that one would leave most of the top lenses at home and travel with one "do-all", similarly the best tripod at home and travel with a lightest one.

KR (ken rockwell) if I recall correctly was talking about the previous 24-120 which was a little of a dog. He did not have anything to say about the latest AFS/VR f4 unit. I would not base my decisions on only the viewpoint of one so call expert nor would should you neglect to do your own testing. Borrow and test then you will know for sure.

He just preferred the 28300 to the 24120 in term of the price & extra range..............................:)

You might want to read KR review again...anyway I would recommend 28-300 over 24-120, price differential could get you maybe a samyang 8mm fish eye for more wacky wide to go along.

I tried all 3 side by side and in the end preferred the 24-120 f4

For me there is no need to, there is too much need to filter off misinformation on his side. I stopped reading his site. I do the best way (or the only way depending on yr pov ) to find out about about a lens - I get hold of a sample by renting or borrowing and shoot with it. The feel of it in use and the returned files tells me how it works for me - it may not be the same for anyone else. Using a camera, using a lens is never identical from person to person, so personal testing is needed.

Wah, the ultimate product endorsement from "The Law" :) Always admired your mastery over light in your photographs posted in the reviews. They certainly open the eyes to how light makes the world of a difference in any photograph, lens & other gears aside...

Thanks I'm glad you liked it, it is more the photographers eye to spot good light.

Although the 24-85 is faster at the wide end, the 24-120 is sharper. The 28-300 is truly a versatile lens but it made my viewfinder darker and this shooting a little slower, all equipment has its strengths and weaknesses. You need to discover them and make the most of it. I have sample images from the 3 lenses in the review section

Disclaimer my choice is made for use with a d800, the results are different on different cameras

And I thought it's not a match for the d800 as mentioned by someone here or maybe he is referring to the d800e......................

The Law has spoken...

was thinkin of the 24-85 f3.5-4.5+60 micro as my setup, but more inclined more towards the 24-120 f4...
gotta check flickr...
