AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR - OFFICIAL THREAD

Bigger and heavier too

" If you are good at reading MTF charts, you know that the new 24-70mm f/2.8E VR looks amazing in comparison. Not only does it have a much higher contrast throughout the frame on the wide end, but its sharpness is significantly higher too – and that’s wide open at f/2.8! The corners look significantly better and although there is a noticeable wavy field curvature present just like in the older version, I bet stopping down just a little will significantly reduce it and increase the sharpness to amazing levels. At the f/4 – f/5.6 range, the new 24-70mm f/2.8E should look optically marvelous, probably in line with the best of Nikkor prime lenses. "

Finally the 24-70mm I wanted... owned the old one and sold it 3-4 years ago.... was rubbish at 24-32mm range.

New ones looking like Cotton Candy - SWEET !

So past history of the PRO Mid Zooms is this......

I see a trend of upsizing.... just like the Western Population... we getting bigger ! :D :D

Info from one of their lens design team.....

"I was also in charge of optical design of the existing AF-S NIKKOR 24–70mm f/2.8G ED, and Mr. Fujiwara assisted with mechanical design. With that lens, we also looked into implementation of a vibration reduction (VR) function. However, we abandoned the idea because the technology available at that time would have made the diameter of the lens too large. Therefore, we consider this new AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR a sort of revenge for which we have waited roughly ten years. Mr. Fujiwara and I were examining possible designs on our own well before the product team was established.

While the existing 24-70mm f/2.8G lens is also quite slim, we wanted to add a vibration reduction (VR) function for which there was no room. We spent every day looking for ways to modify the optical design to give us just one more tenth of a millimeter. With these deliberations, we discovered that there was no way the existing Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for autofocus would fit in the new lens. So, we asked for a smaller and more powerful new SWM."

HRI Optics =

HRI stands for High Refractive Index Lens. With a refractive index of more than 2.0, one HRI lens can offer effects equivalent to those obtained with several normal glass elements and can compensate for both field curvature and spherical aberrations. Therefore, HRI lenses achieve great optical performance in an even more compact body.

Compact body huh.... from this "Holy Grail" Glass ?

Focusing speed is nuts I believe, some 1.5 times faster then the prior model... good if true. ;)

Wonder how the performance to compare with the 2 years old tamron 24-70mm VC

I believe this is their third Zoom ( after the 200-400 f/4 and the Mk2 70-200 ) That is on par with their Super Tele family ( 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 ) in optical quality.

It's possibly being made to match a 50Mpix sensor (future / 3-5+ yrs) as I read somewhere.

As long as its keeping the good things of the G series ie instant and accurate focusing even in low light, tough build quality, plus improving the flaws of 24mm wide open; vignetting, distortion and side softness, its a buy in my book. Price is secondary for such a bread and butter lens.

IMO ... I think the old 24-70mm without VR can do justice.
hope the old lens will be flooded in BnS section here.
If the price is rite, I might buy it ... :)

damn i brought my tammy 24-70 2 week ago

I am missing the 24-70 f/2.8E VR in your original post....

Please find attached the brand new 24-70 f/2.8E VR (LEFT) and the older 24-70 f/2.8G (RIGHT)

Waiting for the grey coloured version.

Fellow want to Nikon but look like Canon. Got some complex going on somewhere.

It's crap ( IMO and for my needs ) in the 24-32mm range.
( I've owned it, used it and sold it 3-4 years ago. )

The new ones looking great.
