First image: just curves and levels adjustment in NX.

Second image: curves and levels adjust in NX, smart sharpening in PS CS3.

Will post up some pics later without PP, direct convert from RAW to Jpeg later.
 

Ok, here's a quick and dry shot of my girl, so pardon the composition and lighting, trying to test out the VR capabilities of the lens at the longest focal length of 300mm, as well as sharpness.

The focus was on her right eye exactly. I am amazed by the ability to shoot at such slow shutter speeds, given the right conditions: breathing and handholding technique.

Below is a shot at 300mm @ f5.6, handheld at 1/20th second, ISO 2500 with a D300:

How much did you get it for? actually what is the min aperture? F5.6?

the 70-200/2.8 is a different beast by itself. though it's good in low light, it depends a lot on the individual using it. some can hold at very slow shutter speeds, some simply can't. i am one of those who can't so i see no point in upgrading my 80-200/2.8 for the VR version.

the 70-300 will have more pulling power when shooting candids but being a 'slow' lens, you have to bump up your ISO or use flash in indoor area.

70-200/2.8: good for low light, indoor sports, etc. (con: heavy)
70-300: good for candids, light weight, outdoor sports, travel, etc.




you already have a great lens (50mm) for low light if focal range is not an issue. the 70-200/2.8 will be great for indoor sports.

large aperture lens (2.8 or faster) do focus faster especially in low light.

looking at your 'arsenal' the 70-200/2.8 will be a good inclusion if you shoot indoor events and sports regularly but 200 for sports is a little bit limiting. if you use flash, the 70-300 lens will also be a good asset for indoor events.

why not buy both? :bsmilie:

yup..buying both will solve the prob..but..:) thats too much money..got to think carefully and decide what is better for me...and not kena the BBB virus..:)

hehe Mendis thanks for your help as well, or i wouldnt have discovered what a gem this lens was.

The min aperture on the wide end is f4.5 towards the longer tele end is f5.6.
Used copies for this lens go for 680-750, depending on condition and warrranty left.

That's because u can go iso 2500 with low noise.:sweat:

I find it slightly sharper when I use it without filter.
 

Blackdrakes: yeah, but bumping ure ISO increases your sensor's sensitivity to light, increasing ure shutter speed, in my case, the place was so dim that my shutter speed was still 1/20s? so i dont think superior ISO capability played a part in my test.
 

Hi, I just got one 70-300mm VR. I really like the results at 300mm end with VR on!

Has anyone tried using it with 1.4x TC or 1.7x TC? Any good or bad results? Thanks.

I have used the 70-300mm VR with the Kenko 1.4x. Some observed CA for high-contrast area. IQ degradation not obvious if you do not blow up to 100%.

I use it for birding under tight budget.
 

Should I sell away my Tokina ATX100-300mm /F4 and buy this 70-300mm?

Any advices please?
 

ok then, leave the 70-200 f2.8 aside due to it's cost. what about 80-200 f2.8? worth trading the 70-300vr over the 80-200? need advice.

im also having the same thought as you..thinking of trading my 70-300 too
