what is the ballpark figure for 2nd hand sigma or canon 70-200/2.8? and the IS version

I would like to know too. Anyone?

I'm not sure, but I got mine at $3100 for the original Canon IS version. So maybe a second hand one might be around $2400 or $2500?

But then again, there are not many photogs who use Canon who would be willing to let go of their 70-200L IS as it is still a very new lens.

Unlike the 17-35L, there are people who would be willing to sell for second hand because they are getting the 16-35L.

No one will ever sell at your offered price...not all lenses are comparable to Cosinas.

You should get the opinion from someone who actually uses both these lenses before. Or you could loan them for a short while during SEED and test both of them on your camera body.

I chose the f/4L in the end, and did not regret... its a light lens, easy to carry about esp. if you travel. Sharp even at f4, and the colour rendition is the best among the lenses I own.

Thx, afiend...
Tat's exactly wat I'm planning for, f4L is da top candidate for me. Its easy to carry but yet doesn't sacrifice da quality. I also got 24-85 USM with 67mm thread of which I can share filters with f4L. Furthermore its only 2 stop slower than his big bro, I guess I can live with that, provided it doesn't break my shoulder at da end of da day...

But then again, f2.8L is really tempting, I mean REALLY TEMPTING...;p

Duh! Hard decision...

Just a correction to henavs, f2.8 is only ONE stop faster than
f4.0. So the difference isn't that great.
f3.5 is only a half-stop. The subsequent f-number of the next stop is always roughly 1.4x the current stop.
So complete stops are f1.0, f1.4, f.2.0, f2.8, f4.0, f5.6, f8.0, f11.0
f16, f22.

Oh, thx for da correction, Prismatic...:)

If weight is not a problem for u,then get e 2nd hand 70-200 f2.8L USM or else e 70-200 f4L IS USM. I enjoy shooting without any stress on my shoulder but sometime have to bear with it if i want Fast & high quality lens. Once a professional said tat no matter how very good a lens or tripod is,if its too heavy u have to leave it in e hotel room when u go for assignment.;)

got f4L with IS meh??

I'm quite sure they dun have the IS version for the f4.0 lens.
In that range only got
f2.8L 70-200mm
f4.0-5.6 75-300mm
f4.5-5.6L 100-400mm.

u forgot the EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM

I bought the Sigma 70-200 EX 2.8 HSM from AP 3 weeks ago... cost me $1248 all in. I have since seen 2 such lenses for sale in "buy & sell" - one for $850, the other for $1,000. I also got to use it with an Eos30 on the weekend shooting model aircraft at my flying club - currently awaiting the results from Standard Photo :D

If price is not a concern, then I understand that the EF is a better lens, but AP quoted me $3k, so I opted to go Sigma. Anyway, with a Sigma 2x teleconverter, you will still get f5.6 out of it so it should continue to work well outdoors. One thing is certain, the kit gets heavy after about 5 mins, so some dumbell training may be required :D

This lens is part of "75-300" series, together with 75-300 III USM & 75-300 III.

I guess its not fair to compare it with its bigger brothers, those of mid-range USM & L lenses...But dun be dishearten by da fact tat its only an entry level lens with IS, bcoz it will always be a good lens in da hand of good user... :)

if you are not a low light freak with a 35 f2, 24 1.4, 85 1.2 or the 50 1.4 and you are not going to shoot avalable light indoors often, then the f4L should suffice (its got flourite too!), i've read that optically it matches the 2.8L (some claim even better hehe!). the resale price will also be better (in terms of depreciation) than the sick-ma on any given day....;)
