Advice on Telephoto zoom lens.

There's a Sigma 75-200mm f2.8-3.5 also if you do not need to constant f2.8. It's more compact & slightly lighter too.

I am also in the same situation, thinking of moving up from my Sigma 70-300DG APO.

After considering a great deal on a Minolta 100-300 APO and even the 70-300G, I realise that they're not that much of an improvement over my Sigma because ultimately they are small-aperture lenses.

So, anybody have opinions on the Sigma 70-200? Price? How much does the Tamron version cost? Thanks!

Actually I think you're just after a faster focusing lens right? The new SONY 70-300G will focus faster, according to sulhan who owns one right now... f/5.6 at the long end is pretty decent even without flash... you can shoot at high ISO with the A700 (if u intend to buy one)... I think the 70-300G good enough... I have a Sigma 70-210mm f/2.8 and it's quite a pain to carry around... 1.2kg... hand ache after 2 hours of continous shooting... right hand ache, left arm shake... too heavy without the use of a monopod...

Yup the lens is sharp and has the resolution to pull off details that adds "data" to the higher ISO. I have been shooting lately with ISO 800~ISO 1600 alot comparing with the early days of my Dynax 7D.

The Ability of the lens to resolve more details helps the Image Processing pipeline to control noise better by having more real data to "guess" neighbouring pixels.

After paying $$ premiium for the Exmor technology, I guess, its a waste not to use it. I can even pull up to ISO3200 where neccesary(when subject is really out of the lower ISO range). Note, The use of Flash is also neccessary to aid in the availability of light at the time of shot.

The weight combo is the Plus factor. A700+Grip+HVL-F56AM+70-300mm already hitting my elbow weight bearing limit...hahah

I got the 70-200, I cant get any sharp image in the 1st 2 week due to it heavy load. But it give me damm sharp image after that, no regret for me. ps..my is sony version, not sure how good is tamron version..anyway it is F2.8 good for low light..

Just got off the phone with someone in HK. One of the more popular shops there (Wing Shing) was selling the 70-200 G SSM at equiv. SGD3000.
