All,
I am going to Bali for the first time and staying at Nusa Dua this October. Any advice on where to dive and which operator is reliable to use while in Bali? Alos any advice on what equipment to bring and where I can rent them? I am currently renting a compact digital camera w u/w casing and may be thinking of more sophisticated setups.

Thanks.

Nusa Penida ;) as for which operator that is quite subjective, you can try surf the net and FYI, most of the operator have got trips to nusa penida

what do you mean what gears to bring, if you are there to dive and you have your own set of gears, why won't you want to bring them?

As for setup, can't advise cos I'm still a newbie photographer myself :embrass:

If you're out looking for Mola Mola around Penida, bring extra thermal protection. The water gets seriously cold from July to September.

Thanks for your replies. I would like to dive the wreck at Tulamben but its a 4 hour road trip from the hotel at Nusa Dua so I guess Nusa Penida will have to do. Anyone tried making the trip from Nusa Dua to Tulamben and back in one day?

When I said "equipment" I meant photographic, not dive. I will heed advice to make sure I have enough insulation when I dive.

Can't wait to go.

Lol, I was there last yr and on the last dive the first thing I saw underwater is a fellow diver showing me the shivering cold sign and then follow by a 20 degree hand sign. :bsmilie:

Yes done it before.. the 4 hour road trip. Pain in the A** sitting there holding your camera and trying to get some sleep. I'd rather stay a night at Tulamben and head back the next day. Staying there overnight also gives you a chance to do night dive on the wreck which I find it awesome if you can place your strobes in nice places on the wreck. Hahaha.

For Nusa Penida... just be prepared to peeeeeeee lots ..to keep warm yeah! 20 degrees, fighting currents and at 30m is not really a fun dive anymore. Just to see the huge pomfret.

Just came back last night from a quickie trip to Bali.

Flew up on Mon nite and Tuesday dived at Manta Point and Crystal Bay.
Manta Point... at start of dive saw 4 mantas at surface. At end of dive saw more than 10. Got up boat, ditched gear and snorkelled with them for 20 mintues... 15 Mantas in All. WOOO HOOO! Boat ride was 45 mins. Operator Bali Ocean Scuba

Road journey from hotel to Tulamben too 2.5hrs. Operator Tulamban Wreck Divers. 2 shore dives at the wreck and the drop off. Drop off lots of macro stuff... dive time 73 mins. AWESOME man.

Does anyone know the water temperature at the end of July? Going there myself :) and need to know what suit to bring.

Am heading down to Bali early August. Am told waters there are cold, especially at Nusa Penida, if you're going to that site. So do bring at least 3mm full suit I guess. :)

Dun forget a hood and gloves.

Some folks get numb hands and slight headache after cold water dives.

couple of places, Bali Scuba is quite good and I think you can rent a digicam from them.
Wear an extra layer if you're going to Nusa Penida as the Thermoclines are going to be realllllyyyy cold.:)

Nahhhh...I stayed in Candidasa. So Tulamben was 1 hr away and there also a transfer point to Nusa Penida near by.

Paradise resort in Tulamben is quite good. ;)

OK, Nusa Penida-too cold and strong current, Tulamben-too far away by road. So,.. anyone knows where else I can dive if I am staying at Nusa Dua where the conditions are fair and I can still take pictures?

forget about diving if u r not diving these 2 sites....do other land sports instead

I agree with kthan. Basically main sites to dive are Nusa Penida (even my new OWD friends are giving it a go), Tulamben and Menjangan (which is even further than Tulamben). Maybe you could just snorkel off Nusa Dua. ;p

I do not recommend OWD especially if they do not have enough experience diving to go to Nusa Penida, especially Crystal Bay, PED, SD these dive sites. Currents there are terrible.
My dive opertor refuses to bring OWD there.

Recommend 2 divesites if you are gg Tulumben, the Liberty Wreck and Seraya, just a must go if you are visiting ... ...

if you get cold easily, then i suggest at least a 5mm suit. i was shivering in 21deg with a 5mm full suit.:o take good care of yourself first so that you can concentrate on taking pic. i wasn't enjoying the dive cos the water is too cold for me. i would recommend a hood too if its available.

Hi, I'm also heading to Bali in Aug. I'll be there 8th-13th. I will be diving with Tulemben Wreck Divers for 1 day then join their Sunfish Safari for 3 days. Where/when are u going?
