I do not recommend OWD especially if they do not have enough experience diving to go to Nusa Penida, especially Crystal Bay, PED, SD these dive sites. Currents there are terrible.
My dive opertor refuses to bring OWD there.

Hi! Thanks for the advice. Actually we're kinda concerned as well. One of the OWD has about 50 dives, the other is really new. We're starting at Menjangan and working our way southwards to Tulamben then Nusa Penida, over 5 days.

We'll work it out with the dive operators on this when we get there. Will be diving with BIDP.

To Cheewah, we're diving 5th-9th Aug. You start, we end. ;p

btw, would wearing a 2mm rashguard under a 3mm wetsuit be sufficient to keep warm at nusa penida?

I guess if you can take the cold, 2mm rashguard and 3mm full suit will sufice.

a good fitting wetsuit will keep you warmer than a loose fitting one. so u think rash guard helps to keep u warm, it is becos it helps make the fit more snug. Rash guard itself helps keep uv away and some minimal protection against abrasion, ntg more.

so if u want to keep urself warm without wearing a thicker, well fitted wetsuit; wear a hood.

rashguard is just a rash guard......

Just came back from my Bali trip.

Nusa Penida was quite cold, but not extreme - 20-21 C. Most people wore 5 mm or 3 + 3 mm suits, and still were shivering as mad. A girl on our trip said she didn't even enjoy the manta we saw since she was freezing so much. Myself, I wore a 7 mm suit without hood or gloves, and didn't freeze a bit. The people who were teasing me for my thick suit before the dives now regret they didn't suit up better...

All dives were quite difficult with strong currents and large "waves" deep (18 m!!) below the surface, so I would definately not recommend inexperienced OW divers to go. A lot of experience and an AOW is a minimum, I'd say.

Some of my experience diving in Nusa Penida is definitely very challenging. E.g. strong current that was sweeping diagonally downwards at Crystal Bay, which meant it was swimming against the current in almost all directions (upwards, forward & backwards), except other than following the current & drift diagonally downwards. Not to mention withstanding the cold water at the same time

Definitely not a safe place for beginners. In fact, it is also quite challenging for experienced divers who are relatively new in handling bulky uw photo equipment. In this type of situation, it's best for the uw photographer to fold the strobe arms to as compact as possible, and hold the equipment as close to the body as possible to minimize the drag. Else, one would use up the air very quickly struggling with the equipment in the current.

That's why one also needs to have excellent uw proficiency to be a good uw photographer.

11-12 I'll be diving Nusa Penida
14th to 31 Aug will be Nusa Penida as well. Manta Point.

heyz, I read that Manta Point has lots of mantas during April to June. For other months, will it still be a good place to go? We'd really like to see the mantas and actually requested for the operator to bring us there...just wondering.

hi guys,

i'm heading off to Bali in about 2 weeks as well. just wondering, is there anywhere that i can rent 5-7mm wetsuits in sg? or will they be available for rental in Bali?

what i'm planning to do is to wear a 3mm shorty over my 3mm fullsuit. but its my girlfriend that i'm worried about, cos she doesnt even have a wetsuit.

thanks in advance!

It depends on where in Bali you are diving, not all are cold. If you are diving in Tulamben, the water is not really that cold.

Why not check with the dive operator you are diving with in Bali? For my case, wetsuits, hoods are all supplied.;)

Hi,

The last time I dived in Bali - I do it safari style. Probably you should try it. Here are the details:

Arrival - pick up by dive operator straight to hotel & stay 1 night at Denpasar.

Day 2 - 2 dives at Tulamben, stay the night at nearby resort.

Day 3 - 2 dives at Lovina, stay the night at nearby resort.

Day 4 - 2 dives at Menjangan Island then back to Ubud.

Day 5 to 7 : Stay at Ubud & shopping .....

You can contact local dive operator - price quite reasonable... I dived with Ena Dive Centre.
