Advice for newbie to m43

Wow, that's a a very comprehensive list. Thanks for the effort!

For primes, I had my eye on the P 20/1.7, mainly because it is small, and most reviews say it is sharp and fast. I'm surprised to see you saying it is slow and noisy? Is it that bad? Or just relative to the P.Leica 25/1.4?

I am also wondering if there's any benefit in getting the 14-42/14-45 kit lens. If I pair the P 20/1.7 with say the P PZ 45-175mm, it should be good enough to start with right?

It's slow in AF relatively to PL25. Noisy motor as it's an old design. 14-4X Kit lens are versatile, are you willing to trade this versatility for better IQ & compactness of the 20? You do lose alot of common focal length with your choice, but if you don't intend shoot wide angle landscapes or you shoot mostly tele focal lengths, then your combi works, again, really depends what your focal length would be. Otherwise a suggestion would be to buy both 14-4X + telezoom (I'm not so familiar with Pany zooms) and see which are the focal lengths you like and sell off what you don't need. Then buy the prime lens of your focal length. Just some thoughts.

It really depends on what people are looking at for the 20/1.7
I love that lens. Is it the fastest ? No. Is it slow? To me, no. It focuses in under 1 second. In good light w/in 1/2 a sec? If you compare against the newer lenses, yes, its not instantaneous. But is it really that slow? sub 1 sec is pretty good if you shoot not too fast moving subjects...

is it noisy? yes.. . If you use it for video, you'll have to turn off the C-AF and once focused, dont change the focus point but just video... or MF..

I got a beginner's m43, the gf5 and I got the 20mm panny as well. I find the 20mm AF works as fast as the kit lens 14-42 pancake zoom when in auto mode but when in Aperture mode it tends to want to hunt more and AF does slow a bit, I use AFS and usually select pinpoint focus ... however when it does lock on it produces really sharp images with good shallow dof maybe not as good as the 25 but for that price point it works for me as a novice. :)

Just me beginner observations of the 20mm but I am glad I bought it.

Olympus has better out of the box colors Jpeg I heard

Over the years,.. I found that this statement is true for landscape and caucasian skintones where a higher saturation works.
But for Asian skintones, it turns us reddish and darker.
With Panasonic,... the ladies I took are delighted when they look fairer.

BTW Olympus have in body IS.

hijack the thread as i dont want to start a new one.

im currently having a G2. Skipped the upgrade to G3 but now with G5, im tempted to get an upgrade of the body.
I have the 14-140mm and 20mm lens.
the rationale for my upgrade is better ISO performance and faster fps continuous mode.
however with similar budget, im also tempted to get the 7-14mm UWA lens.

im also tempted by the higher-end oly omd. but the configurations seems much more complicated.

so im wondering how you guys will spend the money:
upgrade of m43 body: G5 or omd
or
purchase 7-14mm lens

Upgrade body to OMD and Purchase 7-14mm lens? :D if you have that spare cash. But if u really like UWA lens, i suggest u use ur existing body and get the lens instead. 7-14mm lens don't come cheap. :)
