Accesories Checklist

I agree with what most have said but IMHO, you can follow my mantra in photography shopping since I am just starting out too. "Buy the extra stuffs only after going out to take shots in many situations and then really suffering without it". ie, I wanted to buy a flash together with my camera long ago but since I didn't really have enough cash with me, I opted out. Til now, I don't really use an external flash because I noticed that my genre in photography is not those that really requires flash, like night photography and landscape photography. And so,now, when I want to buy an external flash, I already know for what purpose I need the flash for and thus, I would have more or less have gauged the max power of the flash that I require, and the basic functions that I want it to have, since it does not necessarily mean that the commonly used ones or the expensive ones that will suit my taste.

Buy it only after knowing that you will have a real need for that specific equipment and that you need it in your genre of photography.

Sorry if i confused anyone whilst trying to explain. I'm bad at expressing what I wanna say:sweat:

Glad to know that there is someone else with the same thinking as me. For me right now, I would want to focus on learning the different aspects of photography, better to save up these $$$ to invest in better lens instead :)

Many good advise give. Here is a checklist for you.

1. Dry Cabinet (the small one ~$120 will do for now)
2. SD card (at least a class 4 if using video function)- 4GB ~$15
3. Blower (eg. Giottos blower ~$25)
4. 1 good brand multicoated clear filter (HOYA, KENKO will do ~$25-$35). Use a hood as mentioned by others. The filter is extra protection or when the situation is 'splashy'
5. Camera Bag (no need to be too extravagant for the time being. Just need a comfortable strap) $60-$120

The last 2 will open up photographic options and very often improve your shots; But they can be expensive and you may want to consider them a bit later after more research and understanding of your camera/needs.
6. Tripod (I like light ones like a Slik Sprint Pro (~$110); depends on preference and lenses used)
7. Flash (anywhere from $110 to $560 depending on model)

Hi.. i'm a DSLR newbie too. I just brought my hood. So is it useful for me to get a 52MM Kenko PRO MC 1D UV (price $25)? I dun need to take out the UV filter when taking indoor pic right. thanks : D

Its very much a matter of preference and conditions. Some ppl leave the filters on all the time. Some believe it degrades image quality a little. So for the latter folks, they tend to use the hood to protect the exposed lens from unexpected physical harm (as well as functioning as a hood to guard against flare and loss of contrast of course). The filter will still be necessary if you encounter situations like a dusty environment or liquid splashes, which the hood cannot protect against.

wow gummy, i should say congrats on marrying your wife, lucky guy you are:) and do tag along for our Pentaxian outing, you will learn new things, that's for sure...

i notice a strong trend of bribing the wife solutions here and other threads

wise lesson learnt ... lol ...

One of the few times I feel glad being single. :bsmilie:

Don't let all this scare you into remaining single! I think quite a number of Pentaxians here also have very supportive other halves. ;)

maybe i should learn how to budget in a LV hand bag with a lens next time :bsmilie:

"how much did you get ur tamron 18-250mm for ? $1200  "

Anyone with idea where to buy a cable release and angle viewfinder for the Pentax K7? How much is estimated? Thanks

Great timely thread for me
Just placed a reservation for the K-x with SLR Rev. Can't wait!

For a newbie is a Class 6 SD card necessary? I'm looking at Class 4 4GB x2 at the moment.
Also planning to get a hood for the lens.

Hi guys just bought the Kx as well as my first dslr. Thinking in investing in a dry cabinet but don't have
intension of getting many lenses. Hence think the 30+L one is enough for me. Anyone can recommend
any good and cheap one?

Also heard from some pentaxian that the cylinder hood is better than the flower pattern hood. Any
idea where to get a good one? Thanks in advance =)

Any camera shop will stock the dri-cabinet. Hoods also depends on the type of lenses.

The kit lenses all come with the petal hoods but i have not found anything wrong when using them.

Hmm my kit lens doesn't come with any hood =x
