A7r mk2

At 4099. It better be.

hehe not as sealed as the latest 7D mark 2 or some of the WR pentax DSLRS and Oly bodies. then again, the 5DSR/5DS which costs even more are not sealed to these standards as well.

Pentax is famous for there wr bodies..dump in water for several seconds no problem at all...

A7 series are good enough for daily use lah

hehe i dont expect it to be sealed like the pentaxes la... just pointing out even cameras above that price range are not too :p

for me i wont use this camera without adequate care/protection if i know it is a situation it may get wet keke.

Hi, None of the A7 series cameras are weatherproof which means that these cannot be used under rainy conditions unless well protected... It is a pity but perhaps we may get another sealed series in the future... Who knows ? I personally would like a go anywhere / tropicalised weather proof Camera & lenses set-up.

You are wrong. The A7 series are weather sealed. Look at the battery door/HDMI door etc.

I used them in snow and rain, no problem at all.

Hi Ricleo, Would you have any idea who may have some A7R2 in stock in Singapore ? Is it still in short supply with waiting lists, etc... ? I'll be passing through Singapore during the first week in September and I would be happy to buy one before to return to Europe.

try some of the shops located in the Funan Digital Mall and Peninsular Plaza (opposite Funan). Fingers crossed, perhaps by september the stocks will be sufficient for walk in buyers.

Hi Lancelot,

I have the A7R with me and saw no seals whatsoever on this camera: battery door, HDMI door as well as lens mount. It may be possible to provide a seal through extremely tight manufacturing tolerances but I very much doubt it is the case. Furthermore, weather sealing, moisture resistance, tropicalisation, etc... are subject to standards which describe the level of protection attained but unfortunately none is mentioned within Sony literature which would certainly clarify this issue for all.

Having said that I saw a video on YouTube showing an A7r put under a water tap. The flow was soft but the camera still worked after the test... I would certainly not try this...

So to me the level of moisture resistance, weatherproofing, tropicalisation is unclear thus I adopt a conservative stance and don't take it for granted. Any detailed information regarding this as well as reference to the standards would be very much appreciated if anyone can get the information though.

Thanks Ricleo. What about Sony 313@Somerset ?

if you compare the tear down pictures of the 7D mk 2 to the teardown of the a7 series by lensrentals, and the new a7r2 by ifixit, you will see the difference between true weather sealing and marketed sealing.

7d2: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2014/11/cracking-open-the-7d-ii

"This is, by dissection at least, the most thoroughly weather-sealed camera I've ever run across. (I would point out that I don't take apart every camera so please don't change my wording to say it's the most weather sealed camera. I don't know that.) But this isn't just market-speak weather sealing. It's a thorough and complete attempt to seal every possible crack and crevice the camera has."

a7II: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/02/the-a7ii-teardown-a-look-inside-sonys-new-camera

"We don't see any real increase in weather sealing, except around the battery door, and even that is incomplete. However, it is certainly possible that Sony has such tight plastic-on-plastic seals that they don't think rubber gaskets are necessary. Like I said at the beginning, though, I'm pretty cynical about manufacturer's weather sealing claims."

a7r2: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Sony+a7R+II+Teardown/45597 (no specific commentary on sealing by ifixit, but you can see from the teardown the lack of rubber seals at many areas.

worth a try, but that is just one shop in orchard. the Funan area will have 5-6 reliable shops for you to try your luck at in a tight stock situation. Buy it at the airport for most convenience due to the direct 7% gst savings instead of going through the tedious process of tax rebates at the airport with receipts and passports.

Hi Ricleo, Thanks for your responses.

1. Weather sealing: I believe it is better to remain conservative with this in order to avoid bad surprises which could turn out to be costly. Sony statement regarding this is very much unclear.

2. My A7r was purchased gst free from Changi Airport as well as my late NEX-5 but I was not traveling to France at the time. France customs could give me a lot of problems if I was entering with a brand new camera in box. This is the reason I am looking to buy the A7r2 in town get the gst rebate from the airport and send the box to France by post.

I certainly understand that A7 cameras are not as tough as 7D2, pentax K3 standard. But as I have said, I never really care about using the camera in rains and snows. I have been using my original A7 in heavy snows at Hokkaido, no problem at all. Here is a pic for your reference.

Being said, I think all modern cameras and lenses, advertised as weather seal or not, can resist moderate amounts of rainfall/snowfall, but dont try this at home.

Lancelot, Exactly, your last sentence sums it up. It would be good to have clear statements from Sony though...

At least one man encountered some problems :

tobinators.com/blog/index.php/2014/04/everything-else/sony-a7r-in-not-weatherproof-shock/

A Russian man tested the camera under a soft water tap and concluded "rabota !" Which means it works i.e. It is water resistant.

Yup, Sony is not very specific about how good is the weather sealing, so that they wont be responsible for any possible damages..

Yes, I hope it is true as I would not like to take any chances. The camera was very much soaked in the video.
You may have a look at the two references I posted, they convey very different messages...

just called 313@Somerset, waiting list is currently #44, I'm #45

stocks will be in by batches from end Aug or September

:o

:o :o :o

This makes me rather anxious...

I hope that they'll receive plenty stock to fulfill all orders and still get some in stock for walk-ins customers. I have also written to other stores in Funan as per Ricleo's recommendation.

Interesting ! A friend of mines called 313@Somerset and reserved a set on my behalf. They told him I was number 45 too ! How many number 45 could there be on the list ? Could they have more than one list ??? The salesperson also said that the next stock may not be enough to satisfy all the pre-orders... :o :o
