A6000

Sony LearnTV - Phase and Contrast Detection and the A6000 with Hybrid AF

I for one is gunning for this A6000..... been wanting to upgrade my NEX5N.
Bought my NEX5N mainly to document the birth and growing up of my son 2 years ago....along the way added quite a few E-mount lenses: SEL1855, SEL16F28, Wide Angle converter, SEL50F18, SEL18200LE etc
So quite hesitant to switch camp to olympus OMD which had been enticing me quite abit.

Based on specs and review, finally a E-mount decent-sized camera body that has the AF to catch up with my active 2 yr old boy!

So 2 questions:
1) Should I get the A6000 with kit lens 16-50? Will it be very significantly different from my existing SEL1855? Or I just better off getting the body alone.
2) I am headed for HongKong for holiday mid April, should I get my A6000 from there? Warranty? Which shop or area to search for Sony cameras?

Thanks!

I had the 1650 when i upgraded from 5n to 6 and disliked it a lot, the power zoom lever is kinda awkwardly positioned and the zoom ring works on flyby wire which makes it hard to guage. its not as intuitive as the 1855 when it comes to zooming, the larger 1855 gives the entire system a better support as well when doing videos. I ended up trading my 1650 back for a 1855. You can go demo it at sony wisma, some cameras there on the pancake zoom. If your 1855's a sharp copy to begin with, the IQ's better on the 1855 thats for sure . The 16-50 offers better coverage on the wide end but u've the the 16mm pancake so i dont think its necessary. The 1650 makes it a really small package and lightweight but i thought since i'm gonna put the camera in my sling bag or carry it around my neck, it doesnt make a difference anyway. Also its not possible to use a lens hood on the 1650, suffered from a lot of flare issues when i used it. The only merit i can think of for the 1650 is its form factor when powered off, when its powered on it extends out anyway. And if your camera is on sleep mode , gotta wait for the lens to power up and extend which was a deal breaker for me.

It seems like its all negatives here but its my personal preference so go try it out to see if it suits you. I loved the 1855 on the 5n, 6 and nex 7 even when i had other lenses. I would just buy the body itself and use the difference to offset a 2nd hand sel35mm cuz the pancake zoom is seriously not my cup of tea. Sorry for the disorganised flow of thoughts when typing this haha. Hope its useful.

Do Sony SG usually have similar pre-sales offer?
Worth the while? Or just get from the usual reluable retailer for better deals?

"SOME GREAT NEWS!

I just heard from a trusted source that PDAF works on the A6000 using all Phase-detect focus points in ALL modes including AF-S!!!"

i'll wait until the actual set gets reeased before i believe this..so far all the videos online and tests and previews all mention it doesn't..it also looks like it doesn't from videos showing AF-S

hmmm.
it does seem like the pdaf is indeed much faster than cdaf.
looks like when using this camera..afc is the best method of af to use..even for normal shooting..we should just leave it at afc...wonder if that wouod affect the battery life.

How about leaving it at AF-A ? ....best of both worlds ! :bsmilie:
Btw, production cam are not out yet, your conclusions are subjective.

I agree...but usually when companies loan out sets to test..the firmware is usually almost firm and the features also almost confirmed...not much will change after...same with the a7/r..the demos sets are identical to the production sets...

Buy body only, get the zeiss 16-70, and sell all your previous lenses except the sel50f18 :)

haha, interesting preposition.
I was thinking of getting the sel35f18 for more indoor potrait shots. sel50f18 is great, but a little bit long for cramped indoor usage.

Getting the Zeiss 16-70 means I will have lots of redundant gears....SEL1855,SEL16F28,WAC...... and all these don't sell for much money...

If you are staying crop, the 16-70 is the best all around lens. Wide enuff to justify not buying 10-18, f4 with OSS. The 50/1.8 is really good for the money. The 35 is gd to have, but still kinda costly for its use.
