A57 is looking good...

I've owned the K5 before before settling on my A580. Bloody impressive camera, JPEGs and RAW were absolutely fantastic. ISO performance was so sweet. However I couldn't do without the tilting screen but could do without the weather seals. Given that i paid 8XX for the A580 body and the k5 costs 12XX for the body nowadays.. i think i made a good choice : ).

The A57 does look fantastic. I would've kept the A65 if not for the bloody annoying EVF during night time or in low light. The EVF worked beautifully in day time but at night... the absolute horror of looking into a tiny screen that has as much noise as a 5mp camera phone.. sure the pictures turned out alll righttt to an extent, but the "taking" picture part was terrible.

Sony Alpha A57 Focuses on the DSLR Sweet Spot
Priced to compete with the Canon EOS Rebel T3i and the Nikon D5100, Sony's translucent-mirror A57 will shoot quickly and offer impressive video options.

[Click to enlarge] Sony Alpha SLT-A57Sony Alpha SLT-A57Sony today announced its latest translucent-mirror DSLR-style camera, the Alpha SLT-A57, which will replace the Alpha SLT-A55. The 16-megapixel, APS-C-sensored Alpha A57 is priced to compete with two popular midrange digital SLR cameras, the Canon EOS Rebel T3i and the Nikon D5100.

Unlike traditional DSLR cameras and pellicle/translucent-mirror SLRs such as the Canon Pellix from the 1960s, the SLT system uses a fixed internal reflex mirror to drive a continuous phase-detection autofocus system rather than an optical viewfinder; the Alpha SLT series lacks a through-the-lens optical viewfinder. Instead, you get a 1.4-million-dot eye-level LCD viewfinder and a tilting 3-inch LCD screen.

[Click to enlarge] Sony Alpha SLT-A57Sony Alpha SLT-A57Like the higher-priced Sony Alpha SLT-A77 announced last year, the A57 boasts a very fast burst-shooting mode that runs laps around similarly priced DSLRs from Canon and Nikon, both of which cap out at around 4 frames per second. In burst mode, the A57 shoots 12 fps at an 8-megapixel resolution, or 10 fps at full 16-megapixel resolution with the aperture locked at its widest setting; the camera's burst mode drops down to 8 fps at full resolution with manual aperture control. In both burst-shooting scenarios, continuous autofocus and auto-exposure adjustments are enabled.

Video is likely to be a strong suit, as the A57 shares the A77's full 1080p video recording at 60 fps in AVCHD Progressive format. Full manual exposure controls are available in video mode, and the camera offers continuous phase-detection autofocus and auto-exposure adjustments while shooting in both burst mode and video mode.

In a Sony-provided head-to-head comparison chart, the Alpha A57 is billed as having a more-versatile autofocus system than both the Canon EOS Rebel T3i and the Nikon D5100, with 15 discrete autofocus points spread across three cross-sensors. Sony is also touting the Alpha A57's maximum ISO sensitivity of 16,000 and its motion-tracking autofocus system as competitive benefits.

Other in-camera tricks include a new "Auto Portrait Framing" feature that combines face detection and a "rule of thirds" algorithm to create a copy of a portrait photo, analyze the image, and automatically crop the photo to optimize shot composition.

[Click to enlarge] Sony Alpha SLT-A57Sony Alpha SLT-A57Like most of Sony's Cyber-shot, NEX, and Alpha cameras, the A57 will include a motion-controlled Sweep Panorama mode, single-shot 3D and panorama 3D modes, and an exposure-bracketing HDR mode. The A57 is also Sony's first interchangeable-lens model to incorporate the company's "by pixel super resolution" digital zoom technology to eke out an additional 2X simulated zoom at the telephoto end of any A-mount lens attached, including fixed-focal-length lenses.

The A57's price, fast burst mode, and video options all add up to create an enticing camera option for budget-minded sports shooters and videographers. Due in April, the Sony Alpha SLT-A57 has body-based image stabilization and is priced at $800 as a kit with an 18-55mm zoom lens (27mm to 82.5mm in 35mm equivalent when attached to the camera) and $700 for the body only

The K-5 looks still damn good for it's age and price right now. It seems to have much less chroma noise compared to the other three. The effect is more visibe in other parts of the shot.

It ok sometime black is challenge for most dslr. I not happy with mine d700 and 5dmk2 either for such scene also

Can I ask if there's a VG coming out for A57?
Can't seem to find this answer from googling...
Or we're stuck with no VG just like A33/55?

I guess it was a false rumor. They didn't announce a VG with the A57 so it's most probably not coming. I never saw a VG getting announced after the body got launched.

i think.. all SLT series except A77 does not have dedicated VG.. other than 3rd party

From comparison, A57 is slightly better than A55 in term of noise and detail..
hmm decided to keep my A55 again.. LOL

A55 is definitely a keeper, take a look at some pics taken with A55 by this thai.

Those who need some 'inspiration' to decide what lens to upgrade to can also take a look.

It's always been said, not the camera but the eyes behind the lenses. Thanks for sharing the site. Now I can check out the lenses used on the alpha. He has 6 camera bodies and 39 lenses....gosh...

so true. honestly frustrating to see a 24mp on a 1.5 crop :/

but i would enjoy it if they managed to improve the IQ at high ISO. and gave us something that's worth it for me to scream

"SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!"

It's available for pre-order now at s$1249 With 1855kit and comes with free sal50f18 and 8gbSD. Collection on 14apr.

You forgot the $40 shopping voucher. ;)

At this price, will the A65 be a better buy being a 24mp camera. Anywhere to compare images taken between both cameras.

Yes, DPReview.

But "better buy" is subjective. In good light, low-iso shooting, yes, the A65 will be better (it also has a better EVF). But in high ISO, the Sony 16MP sensor is the best APS-C sensor out there.

Yeah, higher ISO looks much better with the A57. I still wonder how long the OLED view finders will last. Not sure if they are worth a premium.
