Seems very promising - 12800 looks usable - if there is no visible banding in the image...

does it have hd vid record feature?

I've seen these too, jpeg results that is.

Funny, recently I challenged whether the new 380 could potentially deliver better quality then the 700 looking at the aging of technology and someone here held it for 'impossible'.

Now with the 500 coming out it seems that it IS possible, even while comparing it to a very recent 900. I guess the truth is hold in sensors being used. At the time where I was wondering what the quality of the 380 would be, no information was present about its sensor but once released it was clear there was no new technology involved, merely a cosmetic upgrade. Hence, no better performance.

With the release of the 500 however it is about technology. And proves my assumption is correct, slowly making me wonder what the value of nowadays camera's is. Today's performance (high-end) is like 'almost' (degrades) gone tomorrow.

If you looked close enough, your assumption had already been correct, with the Nikon D90 and D5000 besting the D300 at high ISO performance.

Anyway, new samples from A550:

Sony has finally caught up in this high ISO war.

.

I have a day job too .. lol. I'm not so much following every brand in the industry but it makes me smirk about the one trying to put me down recently.

I wonder why Sony came out with a new Vertical Grip for the A500/A550 camera. The camera uses the same battery as the A300/350 series. So theortically, the same VG for A300/A350 should be able to be used on the A500/A550 camera.

I guess Sony just want to make more money out of consumers.

Huh? You know the internal structure of A5xx and able to know that VG for A200/A300/A350 would be compatible with the new series?? They release a new series with better improvement over old A3xx series, yet make no attempt to improve the VG? Does that make sense?

Looking at the buttons as well as new features of A5xx series, I would expect an improve VG for this series. Hopefully, place more useful buttons to VG.

My thinking for not having a fully articulated screen might be that having one that can be flipped in all directions would mean higher failure rates for the LCD screen... and if the hinge and connections inside that hinge were to be made to the industrial standards for use, it might cost too much or might be too bulky... or perhaps SONY simply thinks that most users would prefer to shoot landscape when using live view... how often do users of the live view SONYs shoot portrait mode?

BTW, can the thread starter change your thread header? It's a preview on dpreview... not a full review! There's a lot of difference in there...

Who cares, the whole 850 thread series is a mess already anyway, moderators should interfere more here.

No, we need an active mod here... Most current mods are all in the Oly, C and N camps/forum category.

I can envision someone in that role somehow ..

Hahaha... takes a lot of committment though... I wouldn't be ready for it also... sometimes I don't come online for 2-3 days in a row...
