[A55] Night ISO Test Shots

If the A55 multi shot is similar to NEX anti motion blur, then it applies the concept of "zero noise" noise reduction concept using the highest iso as the image base and fill in the color gaps using different steps of lower iso during NR.
It won't fix the situation where the light source is blinking, it won't be cumulative and will remain dark even when subsequent shots are taken lit, should the first shot be taken with the light is off.

@ Ghostfit: Tks for the sharing the shots! Yes the room one looks really good.. what is the exif? I can't seem to see ur 2nd photo taken by your newbie fren handheld.. the image isn't loading.. nice mooncake shots! Given the good performance of the multi-frame mode, I think I'll be using it most of the time, unless I shoot in RAW.

@ kennmail: The 2 camera's in-cam post-processing functions are similar. Hardware-wise, given the higher pixel density for the A55, one would expect worse ISO performance for it. Unfortunately, I didn't take the test shots when I had the A33. If the fps,GPS,megapixel and buffer limit makes no benefit for u, then get the A33.. no need to consider further.. :D

@spheredome: That's an interesting theory.. So the 1st shot is the most impt one! I shall try it out when I have the chance! :)

You're most welcome, the first one I took - F8 1/1.3s Iso 3200 (I think)
For the newbie handheld shot, Try looking here

The mooncake (why do I keep saying that ?:bsmilie:) shots was taken with a Sigma 70-300mm DG macro at 300mm on a tripod in A mode with the final picture cropped.

Yes, I am impressed with the multi-frame mode too, especially so when it's done handheld !

But the really big 'Woah!' factor for me was the EVF being able to compose and AF in extremely low light, you'll really need to try side by side with an OVF dslr to know what I'm talking about. ...it's almost like we now have 'nigh-vision' with the SLTs, what's the use of having ISO-12800 capability if you are not able to compose or AF to shoot ? :bsmilie:

Agree the Sony EVF really rocks... I like using it than LCD sadly it eats more battery than the main LCD hehehe (thats why i have extra battery maybe I'll get one more for long travel or photo taking)

i've tried this as well... really great feature. adjusting the settings makes me 'see' how it would turn out. last time, i'd be doing trial and error by shooting and checking the result. adjust. repeat until i get it right.
no regrets jumping from canon to sony.

Hi all,

Just gotten my A55 recently. So far so good, works better than my older Nikon d5000.

Love the Multi Frame noise reduction. It works brilliant until iso12800

But somehow my iso25600 pictures have some problem to it. It seems that the bottom of the pictures is noisier (with lotsa chroma noise or purplish smudge) than the other parts of the picture. I have taken quite a few shots at this ISO and most turns out the same.

I wonder if the other bros here who own a55 experience this also??

Or is there any problem with my sensor?

Here's a pictures for you guys to see (take a closer look at the bottom part)

Would really appreciate all the bro's comment here

strange... I hope some would bro post A55 Multi ISO shot at 25600... I am using A33 and I dont see any similar chroma like yours

but the image is still a bit usable but I dunno who would want to use ISO25600

I looked through my iso12800 and Multi Frame iso12800 pictures also. Under close scrutiny it seems the bottom part are slightly noisier also, but it is less obvious compared to the iso25600 Multi Frame.

Seems like it is because of the sensor??

Haha bro, I know we rarely use iso25600.. But I was just testing the camera and found it a little weird... Would definitely like to know whether it is my cam problem or it is the same for all a55.

WOW! TBH that is really some good camera which sony had made. for a mere price tag, it shots just like the 1D series :D hahaha

Lens vignetting?? Try smaller aperture?

A33 and A55 uses different sensor. A3 uses NEX3 & 5 sensor but A55 uses a new sensor. Photo quality A55 wins A33 by about 0.5 stop.

Yup, the CA at the bottom is very obvious, I'll try and setup a similar shot with my A55 when I get home from work tonight.

Here's the test shots as promised, I don't think its a problem with the sensor, I had to try quite a number of times with different f-stops and lighting conditions before I managed to replicate the effect

Here's a typical shot without the problem #1

and here's the one showing abit of the effect #2

....and while testing, I found another abnormality (Due to the lighting ?)

This is the normal typical shot #3

And this is the problem shot, notice the noise manifesting itself as reddish spots like some kinda fungus !

...To be fair, we are really pushing the boundaries here as there are currently NO camera that can shoot multi exposure NR shots at ISO-25600 and have them looking as if they're ISO-3200.

may we know what's your WB setting and what kind of lighting? I have not tried doing multi frame ISO on white light.. but mine is A33 so not sure if this is isolated to A55 only

Hi,
The Multi Frame mode look interesting (similar to what I do when doing Astrophotography), but if I understand what it actually does correctly, I think you might have problem shooting a moving object with it.

By the way, does it work in RAW or only in JPEG??

Have a nice day.

Yes for the ISO Multi Frame it would be hard to use when the subject is moving. Also the Auto HDR.... Both of these neat function ony works for Jpeg

cheers

Mine's on auto WB under flourescent lighting (light is shining directly from the top)
Like I said, I had to try several different settings before I got that one (#2) which shows a slight hint of the chroma noise at the bottom.

Nope, subject was perfectly stationary ...Multi shots NR works only in JPG mode, RAW would disable it.
