Yes, the camera will try to use the biggest possible aperture to ensure sufficient shutter speed.

But then it's a bit wierd why it doesn't go to F1.8 for your 50mm. Maybe you manually select a ISO that is high enough?

The logic is rather complex and not so simple as we thought
As example, my 70-300G run between f5.6-f7.1
My f1.7 go between f1.7-f2.2

My guess is sufficient shutter speed comes first, then followed by best contrast

i got my a550 body at only $699.. during that harvey norman offer period.. buying a500 now for $899 seems abit too expensive.. why not try clubsnap's buy/sell?

Try Harvey Norman. I was told that the price is around $699 for the A500 with VG at some stores. Not sure if there's anymore available. :dunno:

Actually it's not a promo period. It's stock-clearing period. That time i went Manly and they are selling at A550 @ 799.00 with 3 sets left. I think should be sold out liao. Can call to ask.

Hi, like to verify with you guys, I have a A550, if I use the 50mm F1.8 Lens, all scene mode and P mode will stay fixed at F2, and if I use the 17-50mm lens, all scene mode and P mode stay fixed at F2.8, is this normal?

Try A mode. If u can go to F1.8, then it's normal.

If u use scene mode, the camera will decide the aperture for u.

guys, does anyone here experiencing a red light glowing from the right side of the viewfinder each time the camera doing Auto Focusing? and there is also a thin line from each focus point to right side of the viewfinder?

I just look at my A33 after seeing your post...

1. I dont see the red dot glowing from the right side on both LCD (Live View) and EVF
2. Also the thin line I dont see this I have horizon elevation guage this is the only line I see that intersect the AF point or area (those small boxes)

I have change the disply mode by presseing the DISP button (up in the 4 way navi button) and I cant replecate the things you've mentioned. Could you describe them a bit more pls?

Thats from the AF confirmation led that light up each of the 9 AF points, it's normal and only visible against a dark background, you won't see it in bright daylight.

I just look at my A33 after seeing your post...

if it is OVF then the red light(s) like Ghosfit said is the Af points... maybe your AF was set to spot to the right most...

yeah thats why I rush check my A33 lols... thats why when I saw your post i was laughing coz I over look at the thread I thought I was in A55 lols anyways how easily I have forgotten the OVF of my E620 it has the same AF via OVF it's red color dots...

but its a bit annoying mah? some of red light glowing in the viewfinder, i can accept if the focus point and the thin line blinking but the red light is annoying for me. yes, u only can see it in a quite dark situation. in a bright situation not really can see it. your's also like a leak light from the right of the viewfinder? actually it's almost cover all the viewfinder, but not clear...
are ur 550 the same too? last night i go to sony center and i see their display set experiencing the same red light, including a500..
