A Singapore Affair

my sentiments exactly.

you have come a long way from starting the thread, i can really see the growth you've had experienced.

i've always had a soft spot for monochromatic pictures, which is why all my pieces for art (i took a higher level visual art diploma) are all uni-colored. the soft sepia tone of #71 evokes a lot of emotion, as if this very still moment summarized the story of her life. i would say the composition in this image is rather cluttered though, it would seem perfect if you had taken the shot from a lower angle, perhaps 15-20cm lower. that would provide the illusion of you going down to her "level", and portray a more intimate relationship between the photographer and the subject.

then again, i'm only an art student, not a professional photographer. haha.

also, kudos on the watermark changes seen in the last few shots. I believe the watermark should complement both the color and the composition in the picture, which was what you managed to accomplish. (from #61 onwards). i think the architecture shots you took are very, very impressive.

i have a query. in #75, did you use a slight vignette? and what lens did you use, i really really like the depth of field encompassed in the picture; the gradient of the blur intensifies the depth increases.

i myself am starting on a little project, and am curious as to where you usually go for pictures such as #61,62,84,85?

as little as you know it, you've been an inspiration, not just to me but others like me. keep doing what you love, because you're good at it (and getting better).

Hi rumpy, thanks so much for your encouragement. To me, photography is a process of constant learning, sharing and evolving. I'm very pleased to learn that I've been moving along on the right track, and that my works have inspired fellow photography enthusiasts :)

For #71, I find the old lady a very respectable character as she is still working hard to support herself despite her ripe old age. Maybe she has no choice, or maybe she prefers to stay active. But regardless of her background, she has demonstrated that one could survive independently with a never-say-never attitude. She is a stark contrast compared to some able-bodied beggars on the streets... Regarding the composition, I actually squadded down like a sniper and use a long lens to capture her tireness... I placed her face on the one-third imaginery line from the top right to maintain a more balanced compo. The tight crop is to enable her facial expression to be shown more clearly. I noted your suggestion and will try out next time when opportunity arises!

#75 was shot with a Sigma 20mm f1.8 lens on a Nikon D50 at f2.8. The lens can indeed render pleasing bokeh. The vignette was added during post-processing to focus viewer's attention at the laughing buddha.

#61 and #85 were taken at Marina Golf Driving Range. #62 was taken in Chinatown, somewhere around the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. #84 was taken at Upper Pierce Reservoir.

Have fun shooting and show us your works soon!

Hi paperrockstar, thanks for your kind comment! I have never used a filter, and there's no special technique or equipment used to capture those water sparkle. Right timing, right exposure and small aperture are the keys to image like #8. :)
